Harlan’s YWAM Journey

Dear friends & family,
I’m writing to tell you about a new and exciting season in my life, and to share with you what God is doing in and through me.
As many of you may know, from an early age I struggled with an addiction to drugs. For many years I lived with a lack of purpose and shame. However, God has radically changed my life.
Since giving my life to Jesus, I have become a completely new person. In April of last year I was baptized, and since then I have surrounded myself with mentors and accountability to help me grow and overcome my addiction and shame. It has been a long journey but I am amazed at how God has set me free from my past and has given me a completely new purpose in him.
Ultimately, discovering God’s incredible love for me and the fact that he has a plan for my life is what has lead me to want to follow him with everything I have. He has given me a new passion to seek him, to worship him, and to be hungry for his Word. He has also given me a desire for others to experience God’s mercy like I have.
While seeking what God’s purpose would look like for this time in my life, he put an organization called Youth With A Mission (YWAM) on my heart. YWAM is an international volunteer organization whose goal is to Know God and Make Him Known. This is exactly what I want to keep learning how to do. YWAM has a program called the Discipleship Training School (DTS) which equips young people to carry out the mission of bringing people to Jesus. This is a 6 month program that happens all around the world.
I have chosen to attend the DTS in Louisville, KY starting on March 31st. For the first 12 weeks, I will be studying the Bible, receiving missionary training, and growing in my faith with other believers in community. Then, for the following 2 months I will have a chance to apply what I have learned on the mission field. My team and I will be traveling to another country (which will be determined while I am in Louisville) to share the gospel among the nations.
God has shown me that his plans are so much bigger than my own. He has put YWAM on my heart because I want to see people transformed by the gospel the way that I was. I want the Lord to work through me in huge ways to change lives for Him.
The reason I’m writing to you specifically is so that you can partner with me in this journey that God is taking me on. The first thing you can do to help me with this journey is pray for me. Pray that I would remain steadfast in God’s will and in the person Christ says that I am, that I will be malleable to God’s will for me, and that I will surround myself with people I can grow with. When I think of prayer requests for my YWAM journey, Colossians 1:9-12 comes to mind as a guide for prayer.
Another way you can partner with me in this is by prayerfully considering a donation. For the first 12 weeks I have a goal of raising $3,450. This includes living expenses and the cost for the lecture phase of my Discipleship Training School. For the outreach portion, I will need to raise another $4,000 which includes living expenses as well as travel expenses.
Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to read this and to pray for me. I am very excited for what the Lord is doing around me and am very excited to have people that I can trust to get behind me on such a spiritual adventure as this one. God has given me such a desire to grow with him and I can’t even imagine what else he will do in my life and in the lives around me. Thanks again for all your prayers. I know that God is doing wonderful things in my life and in the world and I am so excited to be part of his plan.
