You might say that 2020 has been a tough year, and that would be an understatement. From the COVID-19 pandemic to the devastating hurricanes, we have all been affected in different ways. We know the holiday season can be a time of loneliness, stress, and hopelessness, but it can also be a time of joy, celebration, and love. We know that your contribution will make an enormous difference in the lives of these young Liberians, as we approach the New Year, 2021, we hope that you will be inspired to make a difference in these young student lives.
The Andrew J. Hairston Liberian Missions Foundation attempts to address education challenges related to access, quality of instruction, and improved governance of the education system. In the respective care and concern for the furtherance of the mission works in Liberia the purpose of education is to support children in developing the skills, the knowledge, and the dispositions that will allow them to be responsible, contributing members of their community.
Supporting and providing educational support for the students in Liberia is no small task, but the Wells-Hairston Elementary and Junior High School has been supported by Dr. Wells and Dr. Hairston since 1980.
The Liberian education system is emerging from a prolonged and brutally destructive period of civil unrest. Liberia is significantly behind most other African countries in nearly all education statistics. The Primary School Net Enrollment Rate is only 44 percent. After 14 years of civil war, which resulted in the destruction of much of the country’s trained workforce, Liberia is still in the process of rebuilding its educational system. And now, as educators prepare young people for their futures in a world that is rapidly changing, many contend that the purpose of schooling is to create adults who can compete in a global economy; to create lifelong learners; and emotionally healthy adults who can engage in meaningful relationships.
When students dream of going to school but can’t afford the costs, Dr. Andrew J. Hairston Liberian Missions Foundation steps in to lend a hand. The organization dedicates an impressive 98% of its cash budget to programs directly related to sending individuals to school, and preparing them for college readiness programs which furthers their education.
Wells-Hairston Elementary & Junior High School is best known for its academic stance and commitment to developing the talents of young people in areas of sports. The school is needed for continually providing Christian nurture and in spite of its lack of resources, its doors are always open to students who want to learn whether they have the money to pay or not.
