Harley was a helper. Everyone knew him as the person who hunted for elders. Who searched for the lost in our region. Who took care of everyone around him. There was not a person in the world who didn’t know Harley as a person who put everyone before him.
Each year Harley was known for providing subsistence foods for countless elders, friends and family members who didn’t have the opportunity to hunt. Hunter Success was the epitome of his Iñupiaq Values, as he priced for so much more than his family alone. This spring, he brought home ugruk for elders, widows, family, friends and even strangers. He taught those around him what he knew about safe ice, and Ugruk conditions so they could provide for their families as well.
It’s our turn to help his family.
Harley Shield was lost to our world on July 5th in an accident. He leaves behind his partner and confidant Lindsay Hardy and their three boys, Graier, Dalton and Lloyd. Not only does he leave behind his children and girlfriend, he leaves behind countless friends and kids he helped raise in our community. My kids, your kids, our kids all benefitted from knowing and being around Harley. His smile lit up a room and his infectious laugh could make anyone smile. He took so many under his wing, young, old, local, non local, and more. Anyone who knew him was better for it.
This fundraiser will be used to help his boys, his girlfriend and his family lay him to rest, provide for a future for his kids, and ensure that our subsistence way of life continues. He leaves behind a void that can not be filled. We will miss you Harley. Rest In Peace, my friend.
Thank you for your donation.
