In memory of Harry Jacob Carter

Hi, my name is Julie and over the past four years my friend Lynne and I have been cycling and walking along the coast of England and Wales in short stages. Currently we have covered from Exeter to Berwick upon Tweed near the Scottish border. Almost 1,000 miles. Along the way we have met some amazing people and have shared our journey on Facebook. We have often been asked if we are doing this to raise money for charity and up until now our response has been that this is just a crazy personal challenge. However events took a very tragic turn this year, when Lynne’s 25 year old son tragically took his life in June. The impact on Lynne and her family has been heartbreaking.

the Samaritans note that in 2023, 5656 suicides were registered and this number continues to grow.

The impact this has on families and friends is immense, often left feeling bewildered, depressed and overwhelming sad. With this in mind we would like to continue our journey in memory of Harry and raise money for Amparo who provide support for those affected by suicide.

Listening Ear is a registered charity and growing social enterprise with its headquarters in Knowsley, Merseyside.

Listening Ear began in 1993 as a ‘reflective listening’ service. Volunteers supported people who were struggling following their experiences of bereavement. Ten years later, a child in the local community was first-on-scene at a family suicide and Listening Ear launched its counselling service for children and young people. In 2004, Listening Ear registered as a charity and became the first organisation in Merseyside to achieve British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Service Accreditation. In 2015 , Listening Ear launched its first suicide postvention service, Amparo, providing practical and emotional support within 24 hours of a referral to all those affected by suicide bereavement in Cheshire and Merseyside and we now have services in Cheshire & Merseyside, Coventry & Warwickshire, Kent & Medway, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Mid and South Essex, North Central London, South Yorkshire, Southampton, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth, Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, Thames Valley, and serving personnel within the British Armed Forces, making the service the largest of its kind in the country.

More recently we have added an all-age counselling service to Amparo, counselling aftercare, a professional training arm, as well as an events series.

More widely within Listening Ear we provide professional counselling services for children young people and adults experiencing suicide, bereavement, domestic abuse or work-based mental health issues. We also support Looked After Children and their Carers.

Our services are focused on impact and we are proud of the difference we make to people’s lives.

At Listening Ear (since April 2020) we have:

· Provided counselling to 4715 people, delivering over 40,000 appointments.

· Delivered bereavement support to 849 people, delivering over 7000 Helpline support sessions.

· Supported 1673 individuals bereaved by suicide within our Amparo Service, delivering almost 50,000 support contacts.

· 83% of those completing therapy or Amparo support with Listening Ear report positive change (using evidenced-based outcomes monitoring tools).
