Hartlepool Headland Boxing Club Save our Club
Donation protected
Since we launched this fundraiser we have reached our original target, we are now trying to get to £5,000 - this will allow us to get floorboards rather than the hardboard sheets, and fix further problems with the floor - a lasting result rather than an emergency measure. thanks for everyone's donations so far. We are blown away and incredibly thankful for the support from you all.
Our boxing club is a large part of the Headland community in Hartlepool. The gym holds training sessions 3/4 times weekly for all ages and abilities, including general fitness. Our club is very much focused on community and wellbeing over training for achievement - even though one of our successes is the current WBO Middleweight World Champion and former Amateur World Champion, Savannah Marshall, who has trained here since the age of 12 and still attends the gym when home.
It’s as much about a supportive network for wellbeing and self-improvement as it is competive boxing. It's brilliant to have Savannah connected to the club, a real inspiration and role model for the girls and boys who come here. We get people coming in from our local area and the wider town and all are welcomed to our club.
An illustration of what we are about is that each year we make a collage of activities from throughout that season, these are dating back to 1999, and are on the walls of the gym. We look back on these memories fondly.
We have one major issue which could finish our club. Parts of our floor are in disrepair, bearing in mind our building is approx 100 years old. Woodworm has attacked the floor in various areas including under the ring and in the office. This has weakened the wooden floorboards to a point where they need replacing and the surrounding boards treated to make sure it doesn't spread. The treatment and fix of the floorboards will cost the club £2,500 and £100 to replace the carpet in the office after treatment. ** Since this into we have reached our original target, we are now trying to get to £5,000 - this will allow us to get floorboards rather than the hard board sheets - a lasting result rather than an emergency measure.
We are a small gym with the main income being from hosting our annual boxing shows but COVID has meant we’ve had to suspend any competitions leaving us struggling financially.
Hopefully, as soon as possible we can go back to training again with each other when we're allowed and while the gym is closed we hope to get this issue sorted and get back to normal asap.
