WHATS HAPPENING?

Kayak for Kelp!

I will be kayaking the length of East Sussex for the future of our planet! From Camber Sands to Saltdean, a stunning 45m stretch of the English Channel. The day is open for anyone else to join in!

The English channel is often ignored and seen as grey, cold, dark, polluted, empty.... It's no Caribbean or Mediterranean for sure but we have amazing oceans right here, on our doorstep. The UK waters are considered to be among the most depleted in terms of biodiversity, meaning the UK is one of the most "nature-depleted" countries globally, with a significant loss of species due to factors like habitat loss, unsustainable fishing, and climate change; leaving less than half of its original biodiversity intact.

The project aims to change all this and turn the Hastings waters into a hotbed of biodiversity and build a blueprint for the entire country to lead the way in making a positive change for marine life, climate change and also educating the next generation.

A beautiful stretch of the coast you will be helping.

WHO ARE HASTINGS KELP PROJECT?

Our oceans are so often ignored and forgotten when it comes to conservation and environmentalism yet so vital. Our oceans are in crisis, and kelp rewilding is one way to bring back lost biodiversity and protect our coasts. This challenge is about raising awareness of how critical our marine ecosystems are and getting people involved in their recovery,

We are a small volunteer community group dedicated to reintroducing kelp along the Hastings coastline in Sussex. Our collective brings together people from all walks of life, from PhD scientists to everyday volunteers, united by a shared passion for the environment. We are based within Hastings Aquarium with an expert team of marine scientists and zoologists sharing a passion for nature. Community Interest Company (CIC): Company number 15808105

WHY?

Our aim is to cultivate flourishing kelp forests that provide essential habitats, acting as nurseries, breeding grounds, and shelters for a wide range of wildlife, including mammals, fish, invertebrates, and birds. Furthermore, we seek to reduce CO₂ levels through these vibrant kelp ecosystems and improve coastal resilience against flooding.

One of the resident seals, hoping for yummy kelp!

SPENDING

Science and research

Funding will support essential marine ecological research and conservation efforts, including deep ecological surveys to monitor biodiversity and environmental health. Marine research vessels with advanced instruments will enable exploration of remote ocean areas.

Underwater cameras and imaging technology will capture high-resolution footage for real-time monitoring. Microscopic analysis tools will aid in examining marine samples and ecological processes.

Laboratory equipment will support scientific experiments, while video feeds will live-stream underwater explorations, enhancing public access. Community engagement and educational programs will raise awareness and encourage conservation participation. Diving equipment will ensure safe, efficient underwater fieldwork.

Collaboration with Brighton University Students

We will actively collaborate with students from Brighton University who are conducting dissertations in marine biology, environmental science, and related fields. These students will gain hands-on experience by participating in ecological surveys, data collection, and laboratory analysis. Our team will provide mentorship and guidance, ensuring that their research aligns with real-world conservation efforts. By integrating academic research with practical application, we will contribute to both scientific advancement and the professional development of future marine scientists.

Engaging Local Schools and Inspiring Future Generations

Educating and inspiring the next generation is vital to the long-term success of marine conservation. We will work closely with local schools to teach students about the importance of our project and the incredible marine environment right on our own beaches. Through interactive workshops, guided beach explorations, and live-streamed underwater expeditions, children will gain first hand knowledge of marine ecosystems and the role they can play in protecting them.

By fostering curiosity and environmental stewardship at an early age, we aim to empower young people to take action for the future of our oceans. The children of today are the conservationists of tomorrow, and through education and engagement, we will help them build a lasting connection to their natural environment.

Overall

These investments will provide a blueprint for others and strengthen marine research, conservation, and public involvement, ensuring a healthier future for our oceans, wildlife, the children and generations to come.
