Hatch’s cranial helmet and travel fund
Donation protected
Our 3rd & and youngest Thomas or as we call him “Hatch” was born with plagiocephaly 8-24-19. It is a condition most insurances consider cosmetic having to do with shape of the head. Approval for treatment can take months to get if at all. Months he is growing that he needs to be in cranial therapy before growing slows and skull plates settle in place. It can be present at birth due to womb position or develop due to back sleeping and car seats. In Hatch’s case he was born a bit wonky and it hasn’t improved. Most likely from position during pregnancy. I have researched our options and found we will pay same out of pocket whether we file insurance or pay independently at a individual cost, as it is first of the new year no deductible has been met. Hatch is now 4.5 months and at the perfect age to get the best results for early treatment. The clinic is 280 miles round trip from us and will require frequent adjustment through therapy time. 3-5 months approximately, with adjustments done as he grows. The helmet will hold certain areas in place and make the areas flat or out of shape fill in the correct areas. We are asking fo help to cover helmet cost and travel expense. Our evaluation is January 17 in Mobile, Al at Hanger clinic. If we can fund the helmet he can begin therapy by end of January at 5 months old and get the most results possible sooner during major growth spurts, and also hopefully avoid the hottest part of Alabama summer in a helmet 23 hrs a day. He hasn’t improved with repositioning and has no other issues contributing to the shape of his skull. There’s no surgery to fix this, only to reshape him as he grows. It’s only going to get worse as he grows and take longer to correct as he gets older. I liken it to getting braces for crooked or jaw issues except we don’t have time on our side to have prepared. The correcting occurs as baby grows rapid in infancy and I can’t slow his growing down sadly. I will be adding info from our visit on the 17th with the orthotic clinic where he will be measured and hopefully get his helmet ordered as soon as possible. He only gets one head and I hope to help him have the best shaped head he can get and know we don’t have to tell him because it was “just cosmetic” we couldn’t fix it.
