Hate Crime Victim at Saticoy Pride Fundraiser
Donation protected
This is a fundraiser for my friend Percy (last name withheld to avoid doxing) who was attacked and beaten unconscious by an angry mob of anti-LGBTQ fascists at Saticoy Elementary School on Friday, June 2nd, 2023. Saticoy Elementary School, in North Hollywood, a suburb of Los Angeles, made national news when right wingers broke into the school stole, and burned a LGBTQ flag in advance of a Pride day. Following on with their flag burning, they showed up en masse at the school on Friday June 2nd, to intimidate and harass students, teachers, parents, and LGBTQ advocates. A local unhoused individual who is a friend of LGBTQ people (including me), came to the Pride event to show his support for human rights. Within half an hour of arriving, while sitting down overwhelmed by the grotesqueness of the mob, he was attacked. A non-cis presenting individual (meaning they don't look like the ideal of what a "man" should look like- long hair and slender build), the hate crimers screamed homophobic slurs at him as they beat him for being a "f*****". Unconscious, LAPD exacerbated his injury by flipping him over and shaking him. Note that LAPD are not doctors, or EMTs, or paramedics. They kill people. They do not carry band aids or stretchers, they carry guns. Despite being steps away and armed, they did not intercede. In addition to this, when my friend regained consciousness, they were interrogated by LAPD about why they were there- even though they were merely holding a sign the entire time they were attending. See video below for aftermath: In the following days, my friend has suffered from extreme disorientation and coherence of thought. When you're knocked unconscious, unlike the movies--- in real life, it's a big deal. People die from it, they lose cognitive function, they lose motor function. I've urged them to go get examined at the ER but being unhoused (in the traditional sense: homeless), the penalty of further financial injury is extremely discouraging. Therefore, this fundraiser is for their immediate medical bills and cost of treatment. Your assistance and donations are greatly appreciated. I feel it's terrible that a LGBTQ advocate would get attacked for holding a sign outside of an elementary school. We are in a perilous moment and it's a cruel foreshadowing that this happened on the mere second day of Pride Month. I feel extra terrible that this happened to an unhoused individual who already suffers criminalization and persecution for being underprivileged in our bitterly capitalistic society. I want them to get initial treatment and to recover the footing they had. Some further context: At this Pride day, June 2nd, the students had a book reading about various families and their lives. Included in those families were same-sex couples. Per the Los Angeles Unified School District, the purpose of this Pride day was to "discuss the diversity of the families that we serve ". At this Pride day, the likely flag burners (see picture) violently confronted LGBTQ rights advocates over the span of several hours. Their rhetoric, clearly inspired by the ultra-right-wing fables spread by new organizations and hate speech podcasters accused both the school, the teachers, and the parents of pedophilia, grooming, and generally despicable moral failure. Above, words from an attending photographer (not the victim). My personal connection: I am a Los Angeles artist (I am the band Precious Child) and as part of my artistic practice, I regularly do mutual aid or "outreach" with the unhoused. Although I myself am housed, I find this to be important as I feel that art which is uninformed of the needs and plight of humanity is irrelevant art. I know this individual from various outreach and communal events. Note that Percy is not fully named and their identity is not fully revealed to protect them. Being a national news issue, it is likely they would be further personally attacked and harassed by "Good Christians" if their face and name was known. I myself have experienced this.
