Greetings, my name is Angelita Pineda, a 34-year-old chef currently grappling with a diagnosis of cervical cancer while 30 weeks pregnant. Allow me to share my journey:
Occupying the role of a chef in a cozy café bar restaurant in Springwood, Blue Mountains, my unexpected pregnancy unfolded against the backdrop of a medical history, having undergone a total thyroidectomy a decade ago. Despite the hormonal imbalances, my husband and I eagerly anticipated the arrival of our little one after a six-year wait. The challenges began when, unbeknownst to me, I conceived, continuing to navigate the demanding kitchen environment even as my pregnancy progressed.
The turning point arrived on March 22, 2023, when I found myself rushing to the emergency room at 10 weeks pregnant due to alarming bleeding. Subsequent hospitalizations revealed complications, leading to a diagnosis of low-lying placenta. The situation escalated on August 14, 2023, when a biopsy confirmed pre-cancerous cells, and Dr. Alison Hilary Brand, a Gynaecological Oncologist Specialist, confirmed cervical cancer at 30 weeks and 4 days pregnant.
Facing an advanced cancer stage, a challenging decision was made to undergo chemotherapy while pregnant, with plans for a Caesarean Section at 37 weeks. The ensuing weeks were marked by a tumultuous journey—chemo reactions, hospital stays, blood transfusions, gestational diabetes, and close monitoring. Following two cycles of chemotherapy, I was granted a brief break before the Caesarean Section, which was followed by Pelvic lymph node dissection.
Post-surgery, joy turned to concern as my newborn faced permanent moderate hearing loss. With our temporary visa status rendering us ineligible for government support, we now grapple with a $30,000 expense for our baby's essential Early Intervention Program.
As I continue my battle with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, the mounting expenses for treatments, medications, and ongoing medical care strain our financial resources. Our private insurance falls short, and with my husband as the sole provider, we find ourselves facing a significant financial burden.
In this vulnerable period, we reach out to you, seeking your compassionate support. Your generosity, in any amount, will contribute to covering the escalating costs of my treatment and ensuring our baby receives the crucial Early Intervention Program she needs. Together, we can make a difference in our family's journey through these challenging times.
