Hula in Europe?
Ka`Imi Na`auao O Hawai`i Nei Institute
Ka`imi Na`auao O Hawai`i Nei Institute has branches in Germany, Austria and Switzerland! How did this happen? Our Kumu, Roselle Bailey started teaching interested students there for over 15 years. Interest grew and these dedicated students have continued their studies and this summer they will present Hulu Mamo, a program that features cultural values which they have identified are similar between the Hawaiian and European cultures. Their program will debut in Bavaria near Munich, Germany and go on to Einsiedeln, Switzerland.
One of the young German students wrote this about her study of hula:
“…but learning about Hawaiian culture, also meant LEARNING ABOUT OUR OWN CULTURE. Confronted with the difference, we were also confronted with the known. Cultural habits were exposed and could be evaluated anew.”
Several young hula students from Maui and Kauai have been invited to participate in this cultural exchange featuring the similarities between Hawaiian and European values. This is a unique learning opportunity for them. Please help support them and the mission of Ka`imi Institute:
…To search for the truth of the Hawaiian culture. Through hula, we help restore the culture to its original dignity. We teach how to understand, enjoy, and appreciate the medicine, science, art, language, crafts, philosophy and religion of the Hawaiian people.
