Donnie’s Road to Recovery

My grandpa experienced a tragic accident while working that resulted in a severe traumatic brain injury on 8/21/2023. He was not placed in ICU until 12 hours after the time of his injury due to being transferred from two previous hospitals by air-med because the facilities could not provide the level of care he required. He acquired multiple skull and facial fractures, bleeding on his brain, and a left carotid dissection. He also suffered from several other comorbidities that have affected his vision, hearing, speech, swallowing, cognitive function, balance and mobility as well as hormone and electrolyte imbalance. Most of the residual symptoms he will have for life. He is still currently in the hospital (Day 78) and is now on the rehab unit. He just recovered from pneumonia for the second time and we are hoping that he will be able to come home in a few weeks. This funding is being created for financial assistance with medical equipment and materials needed to create handicap accessibilty at his home. His current Insurance does not cover these things and it is vital that they are in place prior to his discharge. Any remaining funds will be used towards living expenses for loss of wages. He is completely dependent on a tube in his stomach for all nutrition, hydration and medication administration so therefore requires his head to be elevated at all times. He will need a bed that can accommodate this, as well as a wheelchair ramp to go in and out of his home safely. If You know my Papa Donnie personally then you know he is very rarely one to ask for help of any kind. He is usually the one everyone goes too for help/advice when there's a job that needs to be done. We always say he is a jack of all trades. The word no has never been in his vocabulary. His love language has always been expressed in the form of physical labor and self sacrifice. He finds the most joy in serving others with his many God given talents. He is the most loyal, determined, selfless, hardworking, kind hearted person I know. His life is a true miracle and we give GOD all the glory! We are anticipating getting him home and establishing new routines as he continues to heal and recover. We want to express our gratitude to anyone that has called, text, provided meals, prayed, sat with us and opened your home during this season of our lives. Please continue to keep our family in your prayers. Thank you for taking the time to read and God Bless.
