Help Support Michael Graves’ Fight Against Brain Cancer

Our family is raising funds for Michael Graves, who we call son, husband, brother, father, and the best guy we know. Michael was diagnosed on February 12th of this year with grade 4 glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, after experiencing intense headaches and balance issues. An MRI brought the shocking discovery of a tumor in his right frontal lobe that had grown to a stage four size. At fifty years of age, physically fit and in good health, no one could have seen this coming. A surgery was scheduled for February 23rd, but on the 21st, Michael fell unconscious and was rushed to a trauma 2 medical center where an emergency craniectomy was performed to relieve swelling in his brain and to save his life. Over the next several days, he was intubated and unconscious while waiting to be transferred to Kaiser Anaheim. Once transferred, he was scheduled for a second surgery to remove as much of the tumor as safely possible. 

A couple weeks into surgery recovery, Michael’s surgeon and oncologist were able to determine his eligibility for chemotherapy and radiation and a course of treatment began within a couple of weeks. In early April, Michael was relocated to Palm Terrace Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center where he was able to work six days a week with physical and occupational therapists to regain some of his strength and retrain his brain and body to perform everyday tasks. After two and a half months of lying in hospital beds, this has been a very challenging road but Michael is determined to push himself and we are so inspired by his perseverance.  He remains Virginia Tech Strong.

The most common form of glioblastoma is aggressive and currently incurable. Learning the biology and how and why these tumors grow is uncovering promising new treatments that can provide newfound hope for patients and their families. Michael has just met with the Regional Medical Director at City of Hope Cancer Treatment Center to learn whether he could be a candidate for any of their clinical trials. The treatment plan will be contingent on the results of Michael’s most recent MRI and other relevant markers. 

After Michael was moved to the rehab center, we learned that his insurance would not cover transportation to and from his radiation treatments at Kaiser Kraemer Hospital each day, which required an NEMT vehicle and a team that could move him via gurney. The out-of-pocket cost for his daily trips is currently $6,880 and the growing list of expenses not covered by insurance includes COBRA healthcare costs, in-home healthcare services, home healthcare furniture and equipment, continued rehabilitation and therapies, prescriptions and co-pays, none of which we could have imagined before this life-changing event.  

Many of Michael’s friends have asked the family how they can help, which led us to start this fundraiser. We’re grateful for any donations, all of which will be used to help keep Michael on a path of growing stronger, and to support his efforts to seek alternative cancer treatment and clinical trial options.

Una resonancia magnética trajo el impactante descubrimiento de un tumor en su lóbulo frontal derecho que había crecido hasta alcanzar un tamaño de etapa cuatro. A sus cincuenta años, en buena forma física y con buena salud, nadie lo hubiera previsto. Se programó una cirugía para el 23 de febrero, pero el 21, Michael quedó inconsciente y lo llevaron de urgencia a un centro médico de trauma 2, donde le realizaron una craniectomía de emergencia para aliviar la inflamación en su cerebro y salvarle la vida. Durante los días siguientes, estuvo intubado e inconsciente mientras esperaba ser trasladado a Kaiser Anaheim. Una vez transferido, se le programó una segunda cirugía para extirpar la mayor cantidad de tumor posible de forma segura.

Un par de semanas después de la recuperación de la cirugía, el cirujano y el oncólogo de Michael pudieron determinar su elegibilidad para quimioterapia y radiación y un tratamiento comenzó en un par de semanas. A principios de abril, Michael fue trasladado al Palm Terrace Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, donde pudo trabajar seis días a la semana con fisioterapeutas y terapeutas ocupacionales para recuperar parte de su fuerza y volver a entrenar su cerebro y su cuerpo para realizar las tareas cotidianas. Después de dos meses y medio de estar en camas de hospital, este ha sido un camino muy desafiante, pero Michael está decidido a esforzarse y estamos muy inspirados por su perseverancia. Sigue siendo Virginia Tech Strong.

La forma más común de glioblastoma agresiva y actualmente incurable. Aprender la biología y cómo y por qué crecen estos tumores permite descubrir nuevos tratamientos prometedores que pueden brindar nuevas esperanzas a los pacientes y sus familias. Michael acaba de reunirse con el Director Médico Regional del Centro de Tratamiento del Cáncer City of Hope para saber si podría ser candidato para alguno de sus ensayos clínicos. El plan de tratamiento dependerá de los resultados de la resonancia magnética más reciente de Michael y otros marcadores relevantes.

Después de que trasladaron a Michael al centro de rehabilitación, nos enteramos de que su seguro no cubriría el transporte diario hacia y desde sus tratamientos de radiación en el Hospital Kaiser Kraemer, lo que requería un vehículo NEMT y un equipo que pudiera trasladarlo en una camilla. El costo de bolsillo para sus viajes diarios es actualmente de $6,880 y la creciente lista de gastos no cubiertos por el seguro incluye costos de atención médica COBRA, servicios de atención médica a domicilio, muebles y equipos de atención médica a domicilio, rehabilitación y terapias continuas, recetas y co- paga, nada de lo cual podríamos haber imaginado antes de este evento que cambió nuestras vidas.
