Headstone for C Griffiths, Welsh Gold Olympian
Donation protected
Cecil Griffiths is my wife Vanessa’s grandfather. He is one of Wales’ greatest athletes. He won an Olympic Gold medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay in Antwerp, 1920. He is one of only four Welsh track and field athletes ever to win Olympic gold. He was the British half mile champion in 1923 and 1925 and held many records. His life was difficult and tragic, culminating in his early death in 1945. He was buried in St. Lawrence’s Church Edgware but his family could never afford a headstone and his grave is still unmarked.
Vanessa is now in the late stages of rhabdomyosarcoma cancer and I would love her to see an appropriate memorial on her grandfather’s grave. Any money raised in excess of the target will be donated to the charity Sarcoma UK.
