Headstone for Cpt. J M Hoyt, 7th WI Infantry

Donation protected
Captain John Marshall Hoyt of the 7th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, of the famed Iron Brigade lies buried in an unmarked grave on Seattle’s Mount Pleasant cemetery. Seattle’s Civil War Legacy has undertaken the project of having a proper headstone installed and dedicated on this grave of a gallant officer of one of the Civil War’s most renowned regiments and brigades. Captain Hoyt spent the final years of his life in Seattle, died and was buried here. Hoyt was initially interred in Seattle’s GAR cemetery but was moved to Mount Pleasant cemetery 2 years later after the death of his wife. Records indicate he had a headstone at the GAR cemetery that was removed at the time but Mount Pleasant did not receive it and he has rested in an unmarked grave since 1924. It is appropriate that his grave me marked with a proper and honorable headstone to honor his incredible service in the Union Army. The fundraising effort is to assist SCWL with the costs of installation of the headstone at Mount Pleasant cemetery. The amount we are seeking donations for is to cover Mount Pleasant’s installation fee for the upright marble marker as well as the one-time permanent care endowment of the marker. Seattle’s Civil War Legacy will be coordinating the process of organizing payment, application and installation and will also coordinate a proper dedication ceremony for Captain Hoyt’s headstone memorial when it has been installed and conditions are appropriate for outdoor group gatherings.
