Headstone for Journalist Ethel Payne
Hello, my name is Tammy Gibson. I am a black travel historian. I travel the world locating African American historical sites. My travels include locating and documenting African American and enslaved cemeteries that have been neglected and honor the ancestors.
Ethel Lois Payne was a trailblazing journalist, civil rights activist and was known as the "First Lady of the Black Press." Payne was born and raised on the south side of Chicago. She attended Lindblom High School.
Payne was a reporter for the Chicago Defender, the first African American woman to join the White House Press Corp, and the first African American woman to appear on a national network as a radio and television commentator for CBS. Payne has paved the way for many African American women in journalism.
Ethel Payne passed away May 29, 1991, and is at rest in an unmarked at Mount Glenwood Cemetery in Glenwood, IL. Help me raise money to give Ethel Payne the proper headstone that she deserves.
