Hello my name is Angela and I am asking for help for my 5 yr old niece, Harper and my sister, Anita. Harper is an energetic, sweet, funny, and imaginative little girl with the biggest personality!!! But she currently facing one of the toughest challenges and and literally fighting for her life. Harper has been in the Pediatric Cardiac ICU at MUSC since September 3rd and will be here for a few months, maybe longer.
When Harper was 3 months old we discovered that she had VSD. The hole in her heart was being monitored every 6 months and didn't present a risk. After being transported to MUSC and having several test ran, ultrasounds and xrays done, Harper was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Regurgitation and Pulmonary Hypertension…she was in heart failure. As you can imagine, this came as a huge surprise to our family.
After only being here for a week, Harper was placed on life support, and underwent two open heart surgeries in the span of eight days. During the 2nd surgery, a Berlin heart was placed to allow her heart time to recover. Harper has a long road ahead of her, which will require her to stay in Cardiac ICU, receiving physical, occupational and speech therapies daily. But she is a fighter and we believe she will get through this, but the road will be long and not without its challenges. We are prayerful that, with the repairs made to her heart, her body will heal itself over the next few months. Even with that comes a third surgery. When her heart recovers, the Berlin heart will have to be surgically removed. This will be another major surgery that she will again have to recover from. We are looking forward to taking the same intelligent energetic, sweet, funny, little girl with her big personality and a even BIGGER testimony, a healthy heart and a few beauty marks!!
This was something that we didn't plan for, nor were we prepared for. Anita has been out of work at Harper's bedside for 5 weeks now and will be there until our girl is healthy. We are truly thankful for all the prayers, love and support that we have received. No gift is too small. Any gifts will go a long way in sustaining bills while Harper's heart is healing.
