Many of us have been impacted by cancer. The injustice of a child with cancer is indescribable. As most of us know, it takes great courage and a strong network of support to battle this insidious disease. This campaign is about extending that network for my friend Archie. He is 8 years old. He is strong, brave and courageous beyond measure.
Archie and his family live in Adelaide, South Australia and are some of my dearest friends. They are kind, generous and amazing people. It is hard to know how to offer help to such beautiful friends during these challenging times. The goal of my ride is to raise awareness and funds to support Archie and his family as they navigate the trials of fighting Archie’s rare cancer.
In February 2015, Archie’s parents Michael and Marianne Fragos, received the terrible news that Archie had been diagnosed with Desmoplastic Small-Round-Cell Tumour (D.S.R.C.T). The shock had barely sunk in when the Fragos family galvanized behind Archie and went about seeking the best treatment possible.
The care and treatment available in Australia is outstanding, however the key to tackling this disease is to remove the many tumours with surgery. The MD Anderson Hospital in Houston Texas is the world leader for D.S.R.C.T surgery and their world renowned surgeon Dr Hayes-Jordan has conducted almost a 100 of these operations. As the local experience with D.S.R.C.T is limited due to the rareness of the condition the Fragos family had to pursue the services of MD Anderson Hospital to ensure they could achieve the best possible outcome for Archie. Unfortunately this overseas operation is not subsidised by the Australian government and self-funding hospital visits in the USA are incredibly expensive.
The problem
- A little boy called Archie has a rare and aggressive form of Sarcoma (soft tissue cancer).
The cost
- An initial visit to the USA for Archie’s initial assessment was then followed by a further month in the USA for the operation and recovery. This positive journey has come at a considerable expense to the Fragos family.
What I’m doing
- Raising funds to help ease the financial burden on the Fragos family as Archie's cancer treatment journey continues.
- Riding from Melbourne to Adelaide, a distance of around 800 km.
- Ride date: 31 March, 2016.
How you can help
- Donations of any size will be gratefully accepted. All donations will go directly to the Fragos family.
- If you’d like to ride a day or the whole distance with me, please get in contact.
- Please distribute this message amongst your networks.
- If you would like to donate cycling consumables, lend a spare set of wheels or help out with accommodation on the way, please get in contact!
- Another idea to help? Feel free to contact me!
