Healthcare $uck$: Support Katrina - Colon Cancer

Healthcare $uck$ - Especially If You Have Colon Cancer

So let me tell you about my friend Katrina. She’s a hardworking single mom. She’s built an incredible local community called Oak Cliff Ladies Club for women to connect, support each other, and build friendships. Through her leadership the group organizes meetups to support local restaurants and artists; blood drives because there’s always a shortage; and fundraisers a couple of times a year to support local non-profits and initiatives directly in our community. The biggest fundraiser every year is dedicated to making Christmas happen for several local families that just don’t have the means. She’s also a community advocate for preservation and has served on the Fort Worth Ave TIFF and the Historic Task Force Commission, appointed by city councilmen Chad West and Scott Griggs. Basically Katrina is awesome, but I digress because this is really about what happened when she went in for her first *routine* colonoscopy.

She was a little bit nervous and being the awesome friends that we are, we all told her to take a deep breath, this is routine stuff, and it’s all going to be ok. Until of course it wasn’t.

Turns out Katrina had a HUGE mass growing inside of her, “It’s been growing for 7-10 years now… and if it’s not cancer yet, it’s about to be,” her doctors told her. That night she ended up in the ER for a two-night stay from complications from the colonoscopy. Next, she listened to her doctors and had HALF of her guts RIPPED OUT (her words, not mine) in an intensive all-day surgery that required some recovery time in the hospital.

According to her doctors she is now 100% cancer free! YAY! But now the bills are beginning to roll in one after the other.

Katrina’s always been a responsible human and has really expensive health insurance through the Healthcare.Gov marketplace. But transparently, it will only cover so much as with any health insurance. So here we are… Katrina could really use the support from the community that she puts her heart into making a better place.

TWO WAYS you can support her:

1) Donate here. Every single dollar helps, even if it’s just $5 – every single dollar adds up!
  • 2,000 donations of $5
  • 1,000 donations of $10
  • 667 donations of $15
  • 500 donations of $20
Long story short, we can do it! ❤️

2) Let her help you buy or sell your house in Dallas! Because she would much rather earn your support, truth be told. She’s a fantastic realtor that specializes in city living, especially in Oak Cliff! You can connect with her here: https://www.cliffdwellings.net/

Finally let me say that my friend Katrina did not want to do this fundraising. But we, her friends, said “Woman sometimes you just need help. And it’s ok to ask.”

OH. And if you’re age 45+ and you haven’t had your routine colonoscopy done yet, schedule that dang thing NOW. It’s easy-peasy nowadays and it LITERALLY *saved* my friend's life.

Renata Wells
