Heartbreak during the Holidays

Back on October 28th Dad found Mom unresponsive so she was taken to UPMC Altoona and they found out she had pneumonia and she was sepsis. They gave her a lot of steroids and antibiotics and Thursday November 1st they were ready to discharge her. When she woke up she had to be able to walk for 6 minutes with her oxygen at three in order to be discharged. She stood up and automatically fell into the wall. So they put her back in bed saying they would try again in a little while. When they tried again same thing happened....here they found out she had a stroke over night on Wednesday so they didn't discharge her and sent her down to the stroke unit. They did a CT scan and found that in a 90 day period she had 5 TIA’s, 2 strokes and 2 heart attacks. After being there for 3 days they had to send her to Healthsouth for rehabilitation. She had alot of PT, OT and speech therapy while she was there because the stroke damaged her left side. She was at Healthsouth from November 7th to Thanksgiving Day. She was home Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. Saturday morning she was not making sense, she was lethargic, confused and not feeling well again. She was taken to UPMC Altoona Medical ICU again where they found she still had pneumonia. She was on more steroids and antibiotics but she was having trouble with her left hand feeling cold, tingling and blueish/purple in color. They were unable to check her oxygen on that hand at all. She was discharged the following Saturday December 1st only if she promised to keep her follow up appointments with all her doctors. Which she did! On Friday Dec 7th she went to her lung doctor and her PCP for her follow up appointments. Her PCP did not like the way her left hand or fingers looked so he sent her straight to UPMC Altoona for a doppler test of her left hand/arm. They sent her to emergency surgery at 3:30pm to remove the clot. The Vascular surgeon came out of the surgery at 6:00pm and said that her whole left arm was full of blood clots but he cleaned her whole arm out but the hand and fingers were tough because of how small the veins are. We were told she was in recovery and we could go back soon. 10 minutes later the surgeon returned to the waiting room to tell us they were going back into surgery that her arm clotted again. This time surgery was done at 9:15pm and they told us that she was on the ventilator and was being sent to Surgical ICU. Saturday morning December 8th she was taken off the ventilator and doing ok. She was told she was going to have at least her hand/ fingers amputated because they had no blood flow. She was transferred to a step down unit and was going to have surgery on Tuesday December 11th. She went into surgery on the 11th which was a 3.5 hour surgery the tried to clean her arm out again of the clots but they were unable to get good blood flow. They found 2 blood clots in her chest but they told us she was going to have one more surgery on Wednesday December 12th. She went into surgery at 7:30am and never came out of surgery until 3:45pm. They had put 2 stents in her chest and did a reconstructive bypass surgery to her arm to see if they could “save” her arm. After surgery they were hopeful because they could hear blood flow in her arm to her hand/fingers. She was supposed to go back to a “regular” room but 2 hours after she was out of surgery and in recovery her oxygen dropped and they couldn't get it to come up. She was having a hard time breathing so they decided to take her to Surgical ICU. When she got to the floor she was not doing well the ended up putting her on the ventilator. She received 2 units of blood and still was not doing well. Thursday morning December 13th they checked for blood flow and there was none. So now they have to wait until she is stable enough to withstand surgery to have her arm amputated from her elbow down. They tried to take her off the ventilator but she had ICU psychosis and she was not breathing well on her own so over night they took her off High Flow Oxygen and put her on Bi-PAP. Monday December 17th she was not doing well in the morning she was very confused, having psychosis and her STATS were not good so they intubated her again. December 18th we recieved news that she was not doing well at all and her lungs were filling with fluid faster.  They put her on life support and paralyzed her body. They told us if she didn't make any improvements by the next day that we would have to make a decision.  Dad, Uncle Patsy, Mindy and myself all made the decision that mom would not want to be on life support and she would want God to do what He would want. December 19th Dad, Mindy and I had to make the hardest decision of our lives by taking her off life support. They took her off life support around 5pm and we all had our chance to say our goodbyes, about 10 minutes until 7 my beautiful Mama took her last breath. When she woke up she saw the face of Jesus and she was home. If you can donate anything it will go toward helping my dad during this very difficult time paying for funeral expenses. He is currently off work due to shoulder surgeries. If you are unable to donate please just keep our family in your prayers. We pray that you all are able to someday wake up and see the face of Jesus and always be blessed. Philippians 1:21
