Hearts Unite in Memory of Shomari Shakur

Donation protected

Sunday, May 12, 2019 was a day many of us spent with our families. We shared laughs, hugs, conversations, and a warm meal together. It was a day to appreciate the Moms in our lives or remember the Moms we have lost. It was Mother’s Day.

A day that Shauna Bennett and Jay Shakur will never forget.  Sunday their beautiful baby boy, Shomari Ali Shaun Shakur was placed to bed and when they checked on him less than an hour later he was not breathing. The past couple of months Shauna and Jay had taken Shomari to the hospital multiple times. Concerned he may have had a seizure due to changes in his behavior. They pressed the matter with the hospital but each time they were told he was fine, leaving the hospital without a clear explanation on what was going on with their son. They still do not know what caused Shomari his last breath but the pain they are facing is one that is so strong we can all feel it.

Shomari was just two days away from his first birthday. How heartbreaking that Instead of celebrating his first birthday they are planning his memorial service.

I have lived next door to Shauna and Jay for some time now and living by them I have witnessed their dedication to raising their three boys with lots of love. A family that goes on frequent walks in the neighborhood, pool outings, bicycle rides, or just throwing around the ball outside like boys do. Occasionally we see Jay outside and just catch up on life. Before we know it the sun is going down on what felt like a few minutes of talking. Jay has the biggest heart for people and constantly gives of himself to everyone without expecting anything in return. That is truly a rare thing to find. I can remember when we needed to pressure clean our patios and I came home to find that Jay had done all 5 of the neighbors patios just because he was already working on his. Such a selfless person with a big heart and it shows through his actions and through his family.

This is why our hearts break for Jay and Shauna. Such good people that you don’t come across everyday that are having to face a loss like no other.

If you could find it in your heart to help out with donations and prayers of any size we would greatly appreciate it.

We can’t heal this pain for them but I hope that we can bring a little peace from ridding them of the financial stress so they can grieve  in peace.
