Heather needs a car in newfound sobriety!
Donation protected
Hello,
My name is Heather Healy, and I am 27 years old. In June 2022, I relocated to FT. Lauderdale, FL, to pursue sobriety. This fundraiser aims to cover the cost of a used car for transportation from my sober living home to an AMAZING full-time position of employment I have just accepted. Costs will include a down payment, the vehicle itself, gas and the first month of car insurance. Now, a little bit about how I got here-
My struggle with addiction began at the age of 13 and has only intensified. But unfortunately, I didn't realize the intersection between severe anxiety, depression and substance abuse disorder. For example, "...according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, people with mood or anxiety disorders are two times more likely to be diagnosed with a substance use disorder."
Additionally, "roughly 50% of individuals with severe mental disorders are affected by substance abuse...37% of alcohol abusers...53% of drug abusers also have at least one mental illness."
I feel the time has come to share my story in light of these statistics. My drug and alcohol abuse shifted from social use to full-blown addiction in less than a decade. In 2019, I sought treatment and was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, an anxiety disorder and a severe substance use disorder. I struggled in the years following with self-harm and suicidal ideations while finding daily life challenging to say the least. After two near overdoses this year, I sought immediate treatment for the second time.
Although mental health and substance use disorders are still stigmatized worldwide, I feel hopeful for myself and others like me. After completing a detox program and residential inpatient treatment, I have been accepted into a sober living facility. I also attend daily group therapy and classes from 9:30-4:30 Monday- Friday, individual therapy and 12 step meetings. Any donations will be used solely to fund the purchase of a used car and any upfront expenses (insurance, tags, Florida license, etc.) Anything helps-even 1$, and words of encouragement are always appreciated!
This struggle affects many of us in some way. It's family and friends, to colleagues and strangers. Please consider donating or simply drop a line.
Sincerely,
Heather Healy
