Hector Lemus Landscaping

On Saturday, May 18, 2019, Hector Lemus was driving his Landscaping truck and pulling a trailer designed to hold landscaping tools, lawn mowers, etc.  On this particular trip around the 495 Beltway, traveling east to west towards the Old Georgetown Road area, the trailer was full of bricks for a project that he was working on.

Coming around the beltway, he experienced a flat tire on the trailer which held the bricks and he carefully pulled into the breakdown lane on the side of I-495 and proceeded to attempt to change the tire.  The jack he used was designed to hold One Ton of weight.  Unfortunately, during the process of trying to change the tire, while he had his hand on the tire, the jack gave way and dropped the weight of the trailer – with all of the bricks, from the wheel well covering smashing Hector’s hand (mostly trapping his thumb) in between the tire and wheel well - an estimated 10,000 pounds of bricks had collapsed onto his hand with the weight of the trailer and bricks against the wheel well.

Fairly quickly, the intensity of the pain caused his to lose consciousness.  Thanks to the good deeds of a passerby, that called 911, the Rescue work was underway.

BCCRS RS741B, with a crew of 5 volunteers, used wood cribbing to stabilize the trailer, and then used an Amkus hydraulic lifting jack to raise the trailer approximately 4 inches, taking the weight off the tire.  They are rated for up to 50 tons of lift, but happened to be the perfect tool for this job.

Roughly 20 minutes later, Hector was freed from the entrapment, smashed thumb in-tact, was quickly transported to the Curtis National Hand Center at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital.

Hector is a small businessman and is a hard worker; he does beautiful landscaping and serves many clients around Bethesda, Garrett Park, Maryland and other areas.  Unfortunately, he and his wife both work long hours, but do not have medical insurance.  The four-hour surgery on his hand will be more than imaginable, not to mention the cost of the hospital stay, recovery and physical therapy.  The doctors have estimated that it will be at least 6 months before Hector will be able to use his hand fully again and will be able to return to his level of income to support his family of a wife, a little daughter, and their puppy dog.

Many people were concerned about Hector’s well being following his accident and we would like to ask that as his friends, co-workers, clients, and all those who know how genuine and kind he is, and how hard he works, donate to help Hector and his family get through this rough time when they will be in need of help to pay their medical bills and living expenses.
