"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." - Helen Keller

2020, the 140th anniversary of Helen Keller’s birth

Helen Keller’s life is one we may feel we cannot relate to. Deaf and blind at 19 months, Helen Keller lived in a world of silent darkness. It was not until she found her teacher Anne Sullivan, that she awakened her “inheritance of humanity” (her words). It's only when she acquired the power to understand the world, herself and express that knowledge, that she felt fully human.

Her life from that early age then became dedicated to activism on behalf of not just the blind and deaf, but to all people. She went on to become the first blind deaf person to finish college and was a founding member of the ACLU.

Helen Keller’s life teaches us how a true education can do more than just open our eyes, but allow us to shape the world into a place better than the one we found.

The Pacifist Memorial of The Peace Abbey

A plaque of this nature would memorialize Helen Keller as a great pacifist, suffragist, author and activist of our era, ensuring her name would live on as a beacon for truth and hope for generations to come. This beautiful display will be placed alongside other plaques at the Peace Abbey commemorating leaders of peace such as Mother Teresa, Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Howard Zinn, Maya Angelou, Maria Montessori and many more.

Why Donate?

Helen Keller is more than an incredible example of the triumphant human spirit, her story illustrates our own journey of emerging from darkness into light - from ignorance, to knowledge. This plaque is a reminder for generations to come of the value education can have on our collective humanity.
