Helen's climbing Kilimanjaro for Dementia UK

Donación protegida
I love adventures and setting myself challenges.  So this year in September I will be climbing the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro and the tallest free standing mountain in the world! This trek will take 7 days to accomplish.

This trek will be a new experience, but more importantly I'm doing it  raise awareness and money for Dementia UK. I wanted to do this in memory of my grandmother Margaret, who lost her 9 year long battle with dementia in July 2018.

Dementia is a heartbreaking illness that nobody deserves. It's one that makes you see your loved one decline rapidly, loosing their memory, their mobility and other simple skills severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities. It affects their ability to speak, think, feel and changes behaviour. Currently there is no cure for dementia. However, if it is diagnosed in the early stages, there are drugs available which help to slow down the decline.

As a child I spent so much time with my grandparents that I am grateful to have many memories that I will cherish. I remember the immaculate woman, who would collect me from school with her freshly painted nails and blow dried hair. How she’d always turn to me with a smile before putting on her leather gloves to drive me to my piano class. But first, we’d stop off to get a bag of penny pick and mix as a treat. At weekends she’d take me to swimming class and every week we had the struggle of getting my hair in a swimming cap and getting me in the pool. I’ll never forget how the other children at school were always jealous of my birthday cake because she would bake whatever shaped cake, filling and decoration that I wanted. She taught me how to bake too and even to this very day ever cake is not as good as my Nana's. She was so attentive and caring not only to me but everyone around her. The best way to describe my Nana is selfless. She always puts others ahead of herself.

During her later years living with dementia, she had no idea who I was, lost all of her ability to communicate and had to be cared for in a full time Dementia care home. However, I still remember my Nana as the woman who would get out the "special" table from the garage, to put up in the kitchen at
my height and smile while I attempted to make gingerbreadmen, biscuits and cakes each week with her.

1 in 14 people over 65 will develop dementia
&
1 in 6 people over 80.

Any donation will help make an impact on this terrible illness.

I will be hosting a series of events over the course of the next 6 months in order to hit my target.

Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me and my family.
