Bring back Ms. Helen's Soul Food

My name is Jesdarnel Henton, daughter of Ms. Helen Coleman. Ms. Helen opened the legendary Helen's Diner in February 1970 on 23rd and Union. Despite little working capital, she managed to build an unforgettable name and business for herself through the power of food. For over a decade, Ms. Helen's restaurant was the cornerstone for community and good food. My mother welcomed everyone from B.B. King and Ernestine Anderson to former Sonic Gary Payton and old friend Joe Carter of the Toronto Bluejays into her dining room.
Although Ms. Helen's Soul Food closed in 2002 due to the Nisqually earthquake, her legacy and connection to the community continue to prevail.
I joined my mom in the restaurant in January 1974, and we have worked together ever since. Ms. Helen's is my legacy. It represents family and community - my passion. I am raising these funds to ensure our opening in Spring 2023 on 23rd and Union in the Mid-Town Square. All funds will go to purchasing kitchen equipment, FOH furnishings, inventory, staffing, and working capital. Our landlord has been gracious enough to provide us with an opportunity to be a part of this historic neighborhood once again, and we fully intend on taking advantage of it.
I seek your support in this opportunity to bring jobs to the Central District and train a new generation of chefs who desire to carry on the legacy of soul food in our community. I desire that this will indeed be a family and community business, and everyone had a part in the triumphant re-opening of the beloved Ms. Helen's Soul Bistro.
Sincerely, Ms. Jesdarnel "Jessi" Henton
