Hellnback’s Kidney Journey
Tansi, my name is Lisa Muswagon a member of the Pimicikamak Cree Nation. My husband’s name is Karmen Omeasoo who is also artist Hellnback from Samson Cree Nation in Maskwacis Alberta. We each have a son: D’Angelo, Daysin and together 4 daughters: Jayla, Jaylin, Charlee and Carlee. We are currently on a kidney journey.
In July 2019, my husband was diagnosed with Stage 5 Kidney Failure, we were visiting my home community at the time. That late fall he would receive a catheter to begin the peritoneal dialysis method. Eventually he would change to the night cycler PD method and it just didn’t work for him. He is currently recovering and adjusting to the hemodialysis procedure and will continue this treatment. Prior to Covid, my husband was beginning the process of transplant testing and was advised he’d have a new kidney by the end of 2020. Due to Covid, all those appointment were cancelled until further notice. In that time, Karmen got more sick and had to switch dialysis methods.
Our family is fundraising to cover expenses through this pandemic for the next few months. The expenses will cover our rent, transportation and necessary food for his diet restrictions. I graduated with a degree last fall and am ready to work, but some of our kids are remote learning and we have little ones that still need mom at home as we adjust to our new normal. We appreciate all your support in our fundraising efforts and your prayers tremendously. It means so much to us.
