Help 10 Ukrainian Female Refugees Learn Spanish in 6 months

UKRAID Ukrainian Refugee Centre of Valencia is dedicated to supporting Ukrainian refugees and building a resilient and integrated refugee community.

The refugee experience is uniquely gendered; women carry the burden of being the sole caregivers to children and elderly relatives making rebuilding their lives, learning a new language, socialising and integrating incredibly difficult. Language barriers are severely limiting their job prospects and security. After 2 years without their partners and social support networks from home, Ukrainian women are in an economically unstable position as any savings have been exhausted and aid programs are coming to a conclusion.

To empower these women and to regain their confidence and independence, our intensive linguistic, social and cultural program will support 10 selected Ukrainian women to learn Spanish to B2 level in 6 months.

The program timetable is geared around their family commitments and consists of Spanish classes, individual coaching, conversation practice with elderly volunteers to build new intergenerational and intercultural social connections as well as independent study practice using an online learning platform. Your donation will help fund professional Spanish teachers, learning software, project coordination and formal DELE testing at the end of the program for official use on their CVs.

Furthermore, the program will also collaborate with other NGOs for educative sessions on labour rights, women's rights and other topics to arm women with the necessary tools to advocate on behalf of themselves and other women in their community to serve as refugee ambassadors within the UKRAID Women's Support Network.

We have selected 10 women from more than 120 applications, all of them are mothers including mothers to children with special needs. They have each been selected based on their commitment to dedicate 15 hours to Spanish learning every week, having already obtained a strong base in the language and having demonstrated leadership capacity as well as willingness to contribute to the refugee community.
