Janice Ona Odobo, a one year old infant, was born pre-term on the 23rd of March 2020. She weighed 1.8kg (3.96 pounds) at birth. Janice had sepsis and severe jaundice at birth and had to undergo blood transfusion and she spent her first 18 days in the ICU.
At 3 months, Janice was diagnosed with umbilical hernia and had another surgery that required her to spend another 3 days in the hospital. Sadly at 7 months, we discovered that she was struggling to attain neck control or meet other developmental milestones. Her doctor referred her to a neurologist whom has been keeping close watch on her development over the past one year. To achieve her developmental milestones, Janice goes for physiotherapy twice a week. At 8 months old, her neurologist, again referred Janice to an ENT specialist to get some more tests. The result from this visit diagnosed her with severe-to-profound hearing loss to both ears.
This news was devastating to her family and they are still shattered about this. Her mom always sang to Janice daily and it is heartbreaking that baby Janice never heard these songs or her mom's voice. Janice has never heard any soft words, cooing and lullabies showered on her by her 4-year old brother or parents. Sadly, she has been in a world of humming silence.
Her family cannot wait to see her reaction when she hears their voices for the first time. This can only be made possible only when she gets a COCHLEAR IMPLANT and this requires surgery. Her doctors say the surgery needs to be done as early as possible so she can start hearing and learn to speak; and not have to undergo extensive speech therapy.
Her family has spent a lot caring for her since birth and the cost of this surgery is too expensive for them to self-fund. They humbly beg for your support to cover her surgery and medical bills for the COCHLEAR IMPLANT. No amount is too little as it will be deeply appreciated. We will keep you all updated on Janice's progress and thank you in advance for your time, compassion, contribution, prayers, and positive wishes.
