Help 7 Year Old Wisdom Fund Spina Bifida Surgery

I am raising funds to help pay for two urgently needed surgical procedures for 7 year old Wisdom Mawuta, who lives in Aveme in the Volta Region of Ghana.

Wisdom was recently diagnosed with spina bifida (myelomeningocele), a condition he was born with. There is a tennis ball-sized growth on his lower back, along the spine and fluid build-up in the brain.

His father, a village fisherman who makes barely enough to feed the family, cannot afford even one lab test at the hospital.

Wisdom lives in constant excruciating pain; has never walked since birth, and has never set foot in a classroom. He spends his days sitting in a wheelchair watching his siblings and friends leave for school in the morning and return in the afternoon. Like all children his age, Wisdom would like to go to school too, and become a policeman some day.

We have had Wisdom evaluated by surgeons at FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital in Accra, Ghana. Invoices for the surgery and removal of fluids in the brain come to a total of 149,000 Ghana Cedis (roughly $10,000 US as of June 25: $1 = 15.25 GHS) at the FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital. Donations will go directly towards Wisdom's surgical procedures, hospital stay, rehabilitation, and eventual enrollment in school with adequate school supplies afterwards.
