LVMS 7th Grade Student Diagnosed with Alopecia

Donation protected
Chrystina was diagnosed with alopecia almost two years ago, which is an autoimmune disorder that attacks the hair follicles resulting in bald spots all over the head.  This condition can be brought on by stress or anxiety, and Chrystina suffers from both.  She has been through numerous treatments to address this disorder.  Some have initially helped and then failed, leaving her with more despair.  She has reached a point in her diagnosis where she is so embarrassed with the bald spots and the challenge of trying to style her hair to cover this condition,  that she has decided to shave her head and wear a wig.

Middle school is an especially difficult time to lose one's hair and require a wig.  Chrystina has experienced insensitivity from school peers who don't understand what she's going through.  This has taken a toll on Chrystina mentally and emotionally, and for a brief time she took a break from school in order to cope with the stress of standing out and feeling so self-conscious about her condition.

Recently, Chrystina saw a news special on local news channel KEYT about a CalPoly student who had a similar diagnosis and story.  This college student shared how she received a Cranial Prosthesis, which is a casting and 3D scan of the skull that is then used to create a real hair wig.  Chrystina was in tears knowing that someone who has this condition was able to overcome the same issues she faces on a daily basis and has received a life altering solution.

We are fortunate to live in proximity to a business that provides this restorative process.  Talk of the Town is a quaint salon located in Orcutt, California. Tami Mayorga, the owner and hair specialist, is the only person certified to perform 3D scanning and wig creating in Southern California.  Providing Chrystina with a real hair wig that is designed for her needs will help reduce the stress and anxiety that she feels from her diagnosis.

We at Lompoc Valley Middle School would love to raise money for Chrystina to receive a Cranial Prosthesis.   Any donation large or small is greatly appreciated.  Chrystina deserves to be herself and not be defined by her diagnosis.
