Help a community leader stay in Newburgh!

Rene and his family have been on the frontlines of the fight against the housing crisis. Now, they’re being evicted from their long-time home and need our support to be able to stay in Newburgh for good.

Rene’s been fighting for Newburgh for years as a social worker, organizer, and neighbor. He’s been on the frontlines of the housing justice struggle, working to pass laws to stop unfair rent hikes & evictions, and stop Airbnbs from taking housing away from the Newburgh tenants who need it. And his family have been right there with him, making the food that feeds our members, canvassing to spread the word, speaking out at public hearings, and more.

Their landlord has sold their home and given them 30 days to find a new one. Rene, his parents, and two siblings grew up in that home. The five of them want to be able to stay together, and buy their first home together.

Rene always says, “I was born in Newburgh, raised in Newburgh, and I want to die in Newburgh” — but home prices have skyrocketed and they’re struggling to piece together a down payment. They need $30,000 for a down payment and closing costs. Plus, they’re going to need to rent a place for a couple months while they look for and try to buy a house so they’ll need to cover the first month’s rent and a security deposit. For the Many is pitching in as an organization, a friend has committed an additional $5,000, and they’re applying for loans and services to support first-time home buyers — but they need your help to get to the finish line.
