Fix a Disabled Vet's damaged home
Donation protected
There are a lot of amazing Disabled Veterans and some of them need a little help, so I am doing something. This fundraiser will directly create comfort and dignity for a Disabled Military Veteran and is wife.
Mark is a disabled Navy veteran who cannot work and he uses a walker to get around the trailer. Mary works in healthcare; she assists people with disabilities when they go out in public. Mark & Mary do not appear to have a lot of money or ability to fix their leaky trailer. So, they reached out to a local charity called Veterans Count who wasn't sure how best to help. That charity is aware of what I am doing, so they connected us. I started a grass-roots campaign where we raise money and volunteers to build wheelchair ramps and accessible kitchens/baths. This will be our third project since Spring 2018. We call our fund the Worker Bee Fund because we want everyone to feel like they can help, even a little.
Mark and Mary have a few water-damage issues with their home and all of the issues are repairable. Ideally, I think this trailer should be replaced however until that's realistic for Mark & Mary, we can help them recover some comfort in their current home before the snow falls. My hope is to secure finding through this site within the next 30 days so that we can get the trailer improved. I have attached a spreadsheet that elaborates the following items:
1. The kitchen floor has been rotted out by leaky plumbing. We will replace the floor and fix the plumbing issues.
2. Mark cannot access the tub/ shower because of his disability. We will replace the tub with an accessible unit.
3. The windows and roof in their bedroom are leaking water inside. We will replace the windows with new units and waterproof the roof above.
4. MISC.-The storm door to their home is broken, they have some leaking windows that need to be scraped and caulked, etc. We will repair or replace as necessary to keep weather out.
Why help?
These are good people. They need a little help.
I have the knowledge and energy to fix all of these issues but I am not a wealthy man, otherwise I would just fix it all. I would like to find people who feel the same way and together we can pitch in to get it done.
You will get value in your donation.
I work in the construction design industry so I can get these projects completed expertly. I am donating all of my own time to do this work, and my kids (m18, f16, m14) are helping out. My goal is to hire a local contractor for the demolition and framing as necessary so that it will be completed quickly with a minimum of displacement for Mark and Mary. I will monitor, supervise, and 100% take all responsibility for all phases of the project. It will get done, you have my word as a professional.
You will be part of a community.
Some local charities are involved, and I also bug my friends for money and hands-on help. So far it has been working . An unexpected benefit is that lots of my neighbors and friends show up to help, often with their families. I sense that this is good-will is gaining momentum. I want to use that momentum to fix up Mark and Mary's trailer. I don't have grand ambitions, I just want to help good folks reclaim a little comfort and dignity in their home. You will get pictures and messages regarding the progress.
If we reach our goal, I plan to have Tshirts printed up for volunteers and donors over $100. I might do it even if we don't reach the goal.
