Help a Disabled Veteran Get Back On The Road!
Hello, my name is Charles Reeves, and I’m a disabled military veteran working full-time as an Uber driver while supplementing my income with Instacart and other gig work. This job has helped me rebuild my life after a period of homelessness following the loss of several family members—including the mother of my chronically ill 17-year-old daughter.
My daughter suffers from Crohn’s disease and requires frequent medical treatments in Providence, RI, meaning having a reliable and safe vehicle isn’t just about work—it’s about making sure she gets the care she needs. As her sole remaining parent, Uber’s flexibility allows me to balance supporting her medical needs while earning a living.
For over three years, I’ve been a dedicated Uber driver with over 4,000 five-star reviews, proving my commitment to excellent service. However, after losing my personal vehicle to unfixable suspension issues, I’ve relied on Uber’s rental program to continue working. While I was initially able to rent a Toyota RAV4, recent changes forced me into a Tesla Model 3—a car with great potential but one that now comes with serious challenges.
The Unexpected Danger of Driving a Tesla
Due to controversies surrounding Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, Tesla drivers, especially those working in rideshare, are facing increased hostility, vandalism, ride cancellations, and verbal attacks. Some high-profile incidents include:
- Tesla vehicles being keyed, spray-painted, and vandalized in multiple U.S. cities (Los Angeles, San Francisco).
- A rideshare driver’s Tesla being intentionally rammed in New York City by an angry pedestrian.
- Reports of Uber/Lyft passengers canceling rides after seeing their assigned driver is in a Tesla, citing political or ethical concerns.
- Online forums and social media posts encouraging vandalism of Tesla vehicles as an act of protest against Musk’s policies and statements.
I have personally experienced ride cancellations, reduced tips, and verbal harassment, all simply because of the car I drive—something I had no control over when Uber switched me to this rental.
My Daughter’s Safety Comes First
My 17-year-old daughter frequently rides with me, especially when traveling to and from her medical treatments. I would hate for something to happen to her—God forbid—just because someone misunderstood my politics based on the car I drive. I have no political agenda. I’m just a father trying to provide for his family. But in today’s climate, where tensions are high and people act impulsively, I cannot ignore the potential danger of continuing to drive a Tesla.
Why I Need Your Help
I currently pay $1,800 per month just to rent the Tesla through Uber’s program. This expense is unsustainable, especially with the increased risks and loss of income due to the car’s public perception.
If I can purchase my own reliable, fuel-efficient vehicle, I will be able to:
✅ Lower my monthly expenses with a reasonable car payment
✅ Continue providing for my daughter and maintaining stable housing
✅ Ensure she gets to her essential medical treatments on time
✅ Regain control over my financial future and peace of mind
I am raising $3,500 to cover a down payment on a reliable vehicle. With your support, I can secure financing and move forward without being tied to costly rental fees and unpredictable public backlash.
Any contribution, no matter how small, gets me one step closer to stability. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser. Your kindness and generosity mean the world to me and my daughter.
Thank you for your support!
