Help a friend who has become homeless
Hi, just wanted to share the humbling experience I had this morning. I was on my daily walk with Fi and Sofia and went through Wimbledon when I saw a young man, homeless on the floor near Morrisons. I know it's not an unusual sight, unfortunately in London, but I did a double take. I recognised him. He was one of my old friends from school... That hit me. We were good kids at school, not the type to mess around and be lazy.
I turned back and went to say hi to him. He remembered me straight away and was so excited to see us.
He was chuffed to meet Sofia and Fi and instantly reached for the coins in his pocket to give Sofia £1 to buy a chocolate.
We chatted a bit and I found out he'd been through a terrible divorce that saw him separated from his kids for good, he developed clinical depression and his job let him go (after hearing of his diagnosis). Unable to keep up with rent, he was kicked out of his rented accommodation just before lockdown and he's been using what savings and money people give to him in the street to stay in a hostel room for £35 a night.
His family have turned their back on him. There's no available rooms locally and covid 19 is making council studios & bedsits even harder to get into.
He cannot get benefits because he doesn't have an address. His funds are running low.
All that and his first gesture was to give money to Sofia for chocolate...
I m setting up this gofundme campaign so we can hopefully keep him sheltered until the lockdown eases and he can get through to the council to find him a permanent address.
£35 is what most of us would spend on a takeaway but will make the difference in my friend s life of sleeping rough of not.
Any little you can spare to help us reach this goal so we can all pay for his accommodation for a month. Meanwhile I will be seeing him whenever I can to give him moral support and use our home facilities like computer/ phone etc to find work.
Also if anyone knows of any manual/ any kind of office work going please contact me. He worked for an insurance company before.
His name is Nazim and has been homeless for 8weeks.
Let me know if you can help. ❤️
