Help support Martin’s family after Hurricane Helene disaster

Hello, my name is Gris, and this is my husband Martin; we live in Morganton, NC.

We were affected by the aftermath of Hurricane Helen on Saturday, 9/28/24. My husband went out to help an elderly man who needed help in removing trees that had fallen his home. In the process, my husband ended up falling from his ladder when a tree limb snapped and he fell on the concrete driveway beneath. He was taken immediately to UNC Blue Ridge but then transferred to Winston-Salem.

Due to phone service outages, I had no communication or ability to reach him when the incident occurred. As the day progressed, I started getting worried, and the last place I went to look for him was at our local hospital. He was there, and that’s when I learned that he had lost a lot of blood and broke his spine vertebrae.

He will be on bed rest and will not be able to work, especially with the spine surgery he just had. He is our family’s main provider, and we have two beautiful daughters; a 10-year-old and a 7-year-old. The medical bills associated with his surgery and recovery, coupled with our normal financial obligations, will undoubtedly make this a challenging time.

Nos afectó la secuela del Huracán Helen el sábado, 28 de septiembre de 2024. Mi esposo salió a ayudar a un anciano que necesitaba ayuda para quitar los árboles que habían caído en su casa. En el proceso, mi esposo se cayó de su escalera cuando una rama de árbol se rompió y el se cayó sobre el concreto del camino. Fue llevado inmediatamente a UNC Blue Ridge y luego transferido a Winston-Salem.

Debido a la falta de servicio telefónico por el huracán, no pude comunicarme ni alcanzarlo cuando ocurrió el incidente. A medida que avanzaba el día, comenzaba a preocuparme, y el último lugar donde fui a buscarlo fue en nuestro hospital local. Allí estaba, y fue cuando me enteré de que había perdido mucha sangre y se había roto las vértebras de la columna.

Estará en reposo en la cama y no podrá trabajar, especialmente después de la cirugía de columna que acaba de tener. Él es el principal proveedor de nuestra familia, y tenemos dos hermosas hijas; una de 10 años y otra de 7 años. Las facturas médicas asociadas con su cirugía y recuperación, junto con nuestras obligaciones financieras normales, sin duda harán de este un momento desafiante.
