Help A Houseless Trans Minister and Her Family

Donation protected
Friends, I am fundraising on behalf of my Unitarian Universalist colleague, Andrea, (she/they,) and Wren (they/them,) as well as their three furry companions. Andrea wrote everything out, below. We are choosing a target of 6k to compensate for all the fees charged to use this platform, as well as withdraw funds once this ask is successful. Houselessness is not cool for anyone, but I am particularly distressed that my beloved colleague and her family lack housing. Please help if you can, by donating and/or sharing this message. Thank you very much.

Andrea's words, "On 19 January, 2024, my wife and I became statistics. We fought like hell to make sure it didn’t happen, and then we fought some more, but in the end, we lost the war and became part of the both the homeless veteran statistic (10.7% of the US Population) and the homeless transgender community statistic (87.3% in Iowa alone).

My spouse lost their job in November, just a week before Thanksgiving, for reasons that seem related to Iowa’s ongoing war against trans folks. Our apartment was in the complex they managed, and we lost it in short order. The two events were, in all likelihood, related, and while this is unprovable, it certainly felt related in the moment.

We packed what we could, stored what we could, and fled east to Chicago, where family and friends awaited. Including, we thought, safe landing for us and our cats. That fell through, and our three cats, including one who is as close to a service animal for me as a cat can get, are in a foster care program for homeless veterans. We are grateful that the program exists, but folks have no idea how painful it is to have to voluntarily surrender your pets and your service animal because of institutional hate.

We are currently working with the VA to get approval for a housing program. That program will house us, securely, for the next several years while we rebuild and heal from the last five years of trauma. To facilitate that, we are trying to raise $4,483.24, for the following:

$2998.97 - DOT
$70.00 - IL SOS reinstatement fee
$288.44 - next two vehicle insurance premiums (2x$144.22)
$155.83 - cell phone payment to prevent disconnection
$500.00 - bed for the new apartment
$350.00 - MFC appointment fee
$120.00 - UUMA membership fee

On 2 Feb 2022, I slid on some black ice while traveling eastbound on I-80 towards Chicago, bounced off a guardrail, and went about my life.

My insurance refused to pay for the guardrail, claiming it was the state's issue, and the state has since demanded payment of me. Since I never received the demand letters (they were apparently sent to an old address), my license plates and driver's license were suspended. I was unaware of this until I was pulled over in South Barrington and arrested for driving on a suspended Driver’s License. This happened when we returned to the Chicago area. Paying off the DOT will restore the plates and my DL, allowing the judge to dismiss the case.

I need to complete this by 10 April, 2024, nine days before my court date on 19 April 2024.

Re: MFC. I applied for an appointment in 2020 to visit the Ministerial Fellowship Committee. I was advised, at that time, that the MCO did not have a copy of my background check. Three years later, the issue was resolved with a resend, but now, the process for requesting a date has changed. I… don’t have the funds to request a date. I don’t know when I will, and it’s ridiculous that my career is stuck because of this fee. Same with the UUMA membership fee.

If you made it this far, thank you.

If you donated or shared or thought a kind thought, thank you.

If you wanted to buy Rev. Love a coffee for helping Wren and I out on this, thank you.

Thank you for being a force for good in the world.
