Help a Mother see her child grow up

Donation protected
Lucy is a mother of one and my loving niece. She’s 27 years old and suffers from a debilitating disease, chronic kidney failure (CKF). This is now in the terminal stages. As a result, she has no functionality in her kidneys and relies on dialysis 3 times a week to keep her alive. Lucy has had multiple complications including hospital admissions all while trying to care for her beautiful daughter Amelia, now 3 years old. Debra is Lucy’s mother and my sister. She has been an absolute “rock”  juggling working as a part time nurse, caring for her sick husband Michael, all while providing support and care for Lucy and Amelia.

Lucy’s only chance for long term survival is a kidney transplant. Debra has lovingly decided to donate one of her kidneys to Lucy. Sadly a transplant will not be a cure, but will likely be the first of many throughout Lucy’s lifetime. This will not ensure Lucy a long and happy life, but it will allow her to witness Amelia grow up and have a better quality of life. So we are reaching out and asking for help so that Lucy and Debra can focus on the operation ahead without worrying about money and spiralling debt.

Lucy's Story
It’s been a real battle for Lucy. Eighteen months ago she was diagnosed with Good Pastures Disease, which is a rare auto immune disease that can attack kidneys and lungs. Unfortunately, the Chronic Kidney Failure (CKF) was a result of this. Because of CKF, she often suffers from hypertension, stomach and back pain, debilitating fatigue, muscle twitching and cramps.

The transplant is due to happen at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne in June. We are really hopeful of a positive outcome with an improved quality of life for Lucy. She will have a lifetime of expensive medical care.

The struggle has been physical, emotional and financial for Lucy and Debra. The travel and fuel costs, additional treatments and medications have been costly. Debra’s husband, Michael has complications from diabetes and Lucy is a single parent and has no nearby help. Our family is spread out in country Victoria, Melbourne and Queensland so coping with this illness and all the implications has mostly fallen on my sister, Debra. Over the last 18 months there have been additional financial challenges with a fridge replacement and car issues for Lucy.

Anticipated additional expenses:
- Accommodation close to the hospital in Melbourne for Debra and carer so she can stay close to her daughter (Debra will possibly be discharged 4 to 7 days before Lucy)
- Care and support for Debra’s husband in Colac
- Assistance for Debra and Lucy as they recover together in Geelong. Initially they will need daily transport to hospital for blood tests as they won’t be allowed to drive
- Transport costs
- Extra medications and treatments required that aren’t funded
- Support for Amelia who will also be requiring full time care in the initial period before and after the transplant.

Please donate to help Lucy and Debra in their time of need. Any funds raised over the immediate requirements would be put towards providing for Lucy and her daughter, Amelia’s needs in the future.
