Help a queer bookshop find a home
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Jayme. I’m a queer author and owner of Lavender Books, Central Florida’s only LGBTQ+ bookstore.
Lavender Books will start as an online retail outlet providing queer books to all ages and for all interests. Once a suitable and safe location is found, it will move to a brick and mortar store that will allow for community events, author signings, and a refuge for the queer community of Orlando and surrounding areas.
Our mission statement:
At Lavender Books, we are dedicated to fostering a welcoming and inclusive space that celebrates the diverse voices of the LGBTQIA+ community. Our mission is to curate a selection of literature that not only resonates with the queer community of Central Florida but also uplifts and amplifies the stories written for and by LGBTQIA+ individuals. By championing inclusivity and diversity, we aim to provide a sanctuary where every reader can see themselves and their stories reflected in the pages of our books. Our passion lies in making visibility within literature a reality for the queer community in Central Florida and beyond, ensuring that their lives, loves, and experiences are honored and recognized.
Funds raised will be used to help open a physical location and cover costs of opening a retail shop.
Since we are still in the beginning stages of business formation, total costs are not completely known. In the meantime, I’ll share the costs that are known and what any donations will be put toward.
LLC and state filing formation: $125
Website: $348
Book Inventory: $3000-$5000
Merchandise: $3000
Real estate: ranging from $30-$45/sqft/yr
Interior shelving/seating/decor: ~$3000
The overall goal is to create a curated space where people can sit, relax, congregate, and find their next favorite book. Ideally, Lavender Books will host author signings, readings, community events, and act as an overall safe location for LGBTQIA+ social gathering.
The hopes for the retail shop are to highlight local queer artists by showcasing art pieces, wall murals, and offering products from small creators. If you are one of the above, please get in touch as we’d love to feature you when the time comes!
