'I Smell It On You' Hope, a young woman in college, goes to visit her Auntie Lucinda a beauty store owner and Witch. As a college student navigating independence for the first time, Hope needs her Auntie Lucinda to properly diagnose and remedy her pelvic discomfort. However, Auntie Lucinda has felt a bit neglected by her niece. Can Hope withstand her Auntie and the beauty salon's magical antics? Or will the two remain in conflict forcing Hope to ask her Parents for help?
If you are reading this, you are being asked to support an independent film put on by Marie Thomas. Marie is an independent Writer, Producer, and Director who has shared her work through freelance publications, a book sold in stores, and over 650 ticket holders for her well-received original production of 'The Noir Door' a play shown in Denver and New York City.
In July of 2021, two years after graduating from Spelman College, I quit my salary-based job a year after the start of a global pandemic to answer my true calling in production and creative writing. This journey has taken me through hardships and successes I once only imagined. Today, I am working in New York City whilst actively pursuing my purpose in storytelling. I am a Black and Chicanisma 27-year-old woman with a rich cultural heritage. I believe that storytelling is one of the greatest gifts we as human beings can utilize. Through our most fundamental ways of knowing we exist, stories and narratives inspire us, remind us we aren't alone, promote that we continue to get to know another and take us to other worlds through the art of sharing perspective.
All donations are going to the production of this project. This includes payment, props, costumes, labor, and support of the crew. Most of the production crew is made of young independent artists like myself, with the majority of us being of color and/or a woman.
My future is one of collective community through creation. I have begun the process of mentorship and advocacy by combining my former background in non-profit work with my mission to tell stories. In 2022 I donated thousands of dollars to Girls Inc. of Metro Denver and Voices on Canvas (both 501(c)3 certified). I was able to do this with the ticket proceeds from the sold-out debut of 'The Noir Door', which several community-oriented generous sponsors supported.
The ability for young Black and Brown women and girls to use their voice through production and writing is something I'd like to ensure for others presently and in the future. This belief is involved in every single production I have led and will lead.
