Help a Trans and Queer Family Reach Safety

I'm Cai, a transmasc person currently in the US with an opportunity to get myself and my family to a safer place. I've been accepted to a European university for a degree in Linguistics, which is absolutely a passion of mine. The timing could not be better given the current political situation - this was also intentional nal on my part. It is becoming more and more dangerous for me to live in the US: violence against trans folks rose sharply during the first Trump administration, and this time he and his administration are specifically targeting genderqueer folks by trying to make our existence illegitimate, illegal, and barring our access to the healthcare we need to live. Even if I am not assaulted physically, there is a high probability I will find myself without access to my care, outed to my workplace and public, and/or embroiled in legal battles to keep my gender marker and name.

I was fortunate enough to undergo gender affirming surgery last year, but between insurance refusing to cover it and the hospital's completely non-transparent billing process, I am about $7,000 more in debt than I expected to be based upon the hospital's own estimate.

Between that debt and the possibility federal student funding may be cut, I'm worried that despite the golden opportunity to get out, financial hardship will prevent me from doing so. And I am not confident that national relations between the US and my destination country will remain positive during the next few years. This could be my last, best chance to get out of the States and pave the way for my family to follow me somewhere safe.

Tuition at my intended university is about $10,000 USD per year out of pocket. I also need to worry about up front housing costs (probably $2-5,000) and the plane ticket (~$600 one way).

Any amount you can give is so very much appreciated. If I can raise enough to cover the first year of tuition, I am confident myself and my husband can cover all of the other up-front costs. Classes begin this September, so I'm hoping to raise enough by August 1st.
