Help Above Ground Stay Above Ground

We spent many months preparing to open Above Ground—and our opening was scheduled 2 days after the initial pandemic shutdown in March 2020. We knew San Francisco needed excellent vegan pizza and we had a fantastic concept for a brew pub in the bustling Mission district. Timing really could not have been much worse but we opened with take-out only in the Spring. We loved the time that we were open, as difficult as it was, because we really believed in what we were doing and it was clear that so many of you did too. We had an amazing team show up every day to make it happen. We were unable to weather the storm--we had not been open long enough to qualify for the PPP funding that helped so many restaurants and we had a challenging location accompanied by the general and understandable lack of interest in dining out after 830pm.

 

It took months of negotiations until just recently to get out of a ten year lease, and in the process we lost 100% of the funds we put into the restaurant. We were hoping/expecting to come out with something--at least enough to pay off our vendors.

 

We are fundraising to pay our outstanding bills so that we can open this restaurant again — and in the meantime we will (with your help!) keep Above Ground alive with pop-ups at Millennium serving specialty pizzas, salad, buffalo cauliflower & crusted oyster mushrooms for pick-up SUN/MON nights in Oakland.
