Anyone who is paying attention knows the struggles that animal shelters nationwide are facing. Here in Southwest Atlanta, it seems like there are multiple new animals in need every day. I firmly believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And I also believe that communities who take care of their own are communities that thrive. The people living here are the best equipped to know one another’s needs and help meet them. With that in mind, I am working to set up a fund to support the animals of our neighborhood and keep them safe, healthy, out of the shelters, and in the arms of the people who love them. This money will be used for things like:
- Spay and neuter appointments
- Free microchip and vaccine events
- Supporting neighbors with unforeseen vet bills for injury or illness
- Humane education activities for neighborhood children
- Resources to help neighbors temporarily caring for lost and stray animals
- TNR supplies and appointments for community cats
- Community poop bags!
- Adoption events and fundraisers for local rescues and charities
- Outreach and referrals for neighbors in need who may feel more comfortable asking for help for their pets than themselves
No amount is too small! To give some perspective, a microchip bought in bulk is $5. A vaccine is less than $3. But to a family who got to bring their lost pet home safely, or know their beloved family member is safe and protected from disease, they are priceless.
The first thing in the works for the neighborhood is a microchip event on March 2nd where we have a stretch goal of microchipping 100 dogs in one day. That’s 100 dogs kept out of the shelter for a mere $500!
