Help Adrienne and Tara with Childcare

Donation protected
Hello from Adrienne and Tara! We are two single parents who must find a way to provide care and educational support for our children this fall because our schools aren’t open for in-person attendance. OUR PLAN for the fall of 2020 is for me (Adrienne) to take care of my son and Tara’s children while Tara continues to work. WE ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO RAISE FUNDS to compensate me for my time and meet my family’s financial needs, pay for educational supplies, and afford increased utility costs at Tara’s house, which will be our home base. This plan will keep both of us employed, keep our children safe, and ensure that our children receive the education they need and deserve despite the unpredictability of these times.

Note: Our goal of $8000 is the total needed for the rest of 2020. We need $2000 to get started in September!

While all instruction in our school district will be remote until at least October 5th, we find it difficult to believe that schools will open for in-person instruction at any time this fall. Both of us are low-income single mothers who cannot independently afford full-time childcare, nor can we afford to be stay-at-home parents without income. Yet our children must stay home.

I am a single mother of an 8 year old son. Prior to the global pandemic, health challenges kept me from working enough to afford the healthcare I needed, and a lack of access to healthcare prevented me from recovering enough to work more. As a survivor of childhood trauma, unplanned pregnancy, and 4 years of undiagnosed postpartum depression, I was already struggling to get by. Then the pandemic hit and the challenges expanded exponentially. I am thankful that my health is improving at last, but I am now unemployed and facing housing insecurity. Since 2018, I have been bartering labor for rent on a dairy farm. Sadly, the cows will be sold in October 2020, which will eliminate the option to barter; I will need to pay cash rent beginning in November. My ex and I already agreed that it wasn’t safe to send our son to school, but my savings are gone and I’ve had no significant income since March. My son’s dad is unable to contribute financially at this time since he just finished graduate school and is looking for work.

Tara is a single mother with sole custody of her 8 year old daughter and 11 year old son; two members of her family are immunocompromised and thus at greater risk of serious illness if they contract coronavirus. Tara is a first generation college graduate and domestic violence survivor. She is currently employed as a full-time certified social studies teacher at a facility for incarcerated youth and is considered an essential worker. She cares deeply for her students and our plan ensures that they will also have their educational needs met. Tara requested remote work for her planning time and her supervisor wrote in support of her requests that they might “lose an excellent teacher who [the school] would be unable to replace.” Unfortunately, all of her requests to work remotely or take family leave to accommodate her childcare needs have been denied, and she is at risk of losing her job if she cannot find a stable and consistent situation for her children. As the sole provider for her family in a traditionally undercompensated job, she cannot afford to pay for full-time childcare for an entire school year, nor can she support both of our families on one income.

Between us, we have the time, energy, and physical space to take care of our children, but there’s not enough money to go around. The funds we are raising will pay my salary and support my family this fall---but they will also do so much more! In supporting this fundraiser, you are:

---Providing childcare and educational support for three children who would not otherwise have safe, consistent, and reliable care
---Supporting our homeschooling project with the purchase of educational materials, school supplies, and increased utility costs
---Contributing to the financial stability of two low-income single-parent families
---Protecting the health of our immunocompromised family and community members
---Demonstrating proactive community support for under-resourced families
---Enabling our children to benefit from more 1:1 attention and support than they usually receive in a classroom
---Keeping a highly skilled and dedicated teacher who works with marginalized youth in the classroom, no matter what choices our school district makes this fall
---Ensuring that incarcerated youth in Tompkins County will continue to receive a high-quality education from a qualified, caring and supportive adult
---Showing how we can do so much more together than we can individually

We believe that the most effective way to get through this pandemic is to come together as a community to meet everyone’s needs. Working together is much more empowering and effective! This is a story of connection, community, and creative solutions. We can do this, but we can’t do it alone. We are so thankful for your support in helping us to survive this unprecedented, deeply challenging moment while keeping our families safe.

Love,
Adrienne + Tara
