Help Afghan Family Find Safety in the US

We are the Baton Rouge APA Prosecutors for Prosecutors Refugee Sponsor Group.

Our group originally created this fundraiser as part of the Welcome Corps Initiative, to help a refugee family resettle in the United States through community sponsorship. We were paired with the family through the Welcome Corps program. Now that this program is currently on pause, our group has committed itself to the family we have volunteered to support in the hopes of future opportunities to relocate them.

About the family (names omitted for the safety of the refugees):

The family we are sponsoring is an Afghan married couple and their two children, ages 3 and 1. This family of four became displaced in the aftermath of the fall of Kabul. The mother is a former prosecutor who sent to jail many criminals who committed violence against women. The father is a former journalist who advocated openly for human rights and freedom of speech. While the family is currently residing outside of Afghanistan, they continue to face the possibility of being deported back into the hands of the Taliban. To return to their home country would be a death sentence for the whole family.

As sponsors, we are taking on the responsibility of helping this family resettle in the United States. We facilitate the first 90 days of their transition to a free and independent life by helping them secure housing, buy food, pay for utilities, secure legal employment, and obtain community services.

Our current goal is $20,000 dollars to support this family. The money raised through GoFundMe will be utilized to fund the objectives listed above. All residual funds after the family has settled will either be redirected to a new family in need or donated to similar causes. All group members are volunteers of the program and do not receive any fiscal benefit from participating in this effort. Please help us welcome these displaced persons to the United States and become a part of our community.

To become a sponsor, each member of our support group went through an application process that was vetted by the Welcome Corps program. All members received background checks prior to approval. The coalition was originally led by Community Sponsorship Hub, which is a fiscally sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors in collaboration with GoFundMe.org. We now are operating independently until further support becomes available.
