Help Afghan Refugees in Connecticut
Donation protected
Hi friends!
Over the past two weeks, we've welcomed two Afghan refugee families to our community in Connecticut. Together, the families include 11 individuals, ranging in age from 1 year old to 68 years old –- and there’s also a baby on the way. After a harrowing exit from Afghanistan, followed by living on a US military base for the past few months, you can imagine how relieved they are to have space of their own.
We already have an amazing group of volunteers working together to help get everyone settled and acclimated to life in the United States. Now we need your help!
We are asking for additional funding to help the families with all the necessities of getting settled here in Connecticut: rent, food, clothing, home furnishings, healthcare, transportation, mobile phones, computers, and more. Soon they will begin to find employment and get the kids into school.
Because they had to escape so quickly, the families came to the US with virtually nothing. One young women, who's four months pregnant and whose husband is still in Afghanistan, carried only her wedding dress when she arrived.
The families are being sponsored and welcomed by a small community coalition called the Interfaith Refugee Resettlement Committee (IRRC), which includes local churches, synagogues, and a mosque. Together, this same group helped to resettle a Syrian family five years ago -- and that family is now an important part of our coalition, which is already well organized and enthusiastic.
As you consider your charitable gifts during this holiday season, we hope you can give even a small amount to help us support our new neighbors. We would be so grateful, and we'll update you as we learn more about the families' specific needs. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support!
