Help Afshan Hand Deliver Essentials To Refugees

Hello, my name is Afshan and I am a Teacher in New York City.

Currently, I am serving as the Education Coach providing technical support to a cohort of teachers implementing an intensive summer project for Palestine refugee youth in Lebanon. The SHINE project, which is one of the LEAP program’s initiatives, offers students educational support to allow them to continue their educational journey. LEAP’s projects nurture intellectual curiosity and foster the emotional growth of refugee children.

At the same time, LEAP raises awareness among American volunteers about the Palestine refugee reality in general, particularly in Lebanon. LEAP is a grassroots volunteer-run program that is operated as a labor of love and a strong commitment to refugee rights, as well as the rights of all children.

Over the past week, clashes have erupted in a camp approximately 45 minutes from where I am working--Ein el Helweh (EEH) camp. The clashes have resulted in thousands of people forced to leave their homes and are yet again displaced seeking refuge in mosques, schools, and/or garages. At the same time, over 13 people have been killed and hundreds injured. Due to the abrupt displacement, many families do not have basic essentials as they remain in such cramped and crowded conditions, such as schools and mosques. It is important to note that many will have no home to return to considering the extensive and significant damage.

On Wednesday, July 9, I will be joining BAS in distributing care packages to families including items such as sanitary wipes, hand soap, shampoo, rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer, dishwashing soap, and detergent, among others, in addition to cash assistance to empower families to purchase their specific needs.

Lastly, in addition, any support you can give in helping me gather the funds to sustain the rest of my time here would also be most helpful! The summer has been more costly than expected. Thus, I hope to be able to use these funds to help sustain my work here as well as support local efforts to provide relief to displaced refugees.
