Help Ahmed Realize His Ivy League Academic Dream.

 

 

 

I never dreamed I would one day be a student at Columbia University. Even now, sometimes it’s hard for me to believe I’m here. I dread the possibility of discontinuing my studies prematurely through no fault of my own and because my country, Sudan, has been plunged into a civil war. 

 

My name is Ahmed Osman, an aspiring architect and a proud student at Columbia University’s MSc in Construction Administration Program. I am also the first Sudanese to be offered a place in the Program. 

 

On April 15, 2023, midway through my 1st semester, an armed conflict broke out in my beloved country, Sudan, which left hundreds dead, many more injured, and millions of innocent civilians displaced with nothing to their name but the few belongings they managed to pack in the confusion of it all. My family was among them. 

 

Through the sleepless nights of dreading what was to come, hearing tragic news about friends killed in the war, and struggles of my family as they attempt to evacuate— I tried my best to stay focused so that I can deliver news of academic triumph to my family. Amidst it all, I was able to maintain a high standard of academic excellence. 

 

I now stand at a crossroads at the risk of discontinuing my education. I’ve lost access to the funding that made my journey possible and unable to pay my tuition because of the looting of the banks in Sudan.

 

Despite the kindness Columbia University has extended to me, I am facing the possibility of discontinuing my studies and at risk of losing my student visa.
