Hello, I’m Akış Ka, a performance artist, drag queen, and activist. You could also call me "that girl" of Istanbul :) During my 11 years in Istanbul, I’ve learned so much from the queer community and the streets. Despite all the oppression and discrimination, I’ve reaped the fruits of my struggle to be myself: becoming the celebrity drag queen at parties, throwing myself against the walls of SALT Beyoğlu* (a very sterile art institution of Turkey), leaving my mark on those walls only to become a CIRCA Prize nominee, receiving the Prince Claus Seed Award, sharing the screen with weasel as my co-stars in award-winning films, and releasing singles with the power of queer anthems. I was like #blessed and savored those fruits. Now, new cities, new people, and new streets await me. It’s time to learn more and share what I’ve learned from Istanbul.

Actually, the whole story began back in 2023. I was invited as an artist for London’s Pride Month program and suddenly found myself in London. This allowed me, this time, to perform and share my art and story with a broader and different audience, this time even more freely and almost independently, as an updated version of my true self: Akış Ka 2.0.

Around this time, thanks to you, my dear followers and supporters, I found the courage to apply for the Global Talent visa.But guess what happened? oh my oh! I almost regretted applying. Friends, this is what happened: my application was misprocessed due to misinformation during the evaluation process! As if! For a moment, I found myself questioning, “Am I even an artist?” Of course, I quickly snapped out of it and thought, “Who is a consulate to decide whether I’m an artist or not?” Right? However, when I received a letter saying I needed to leave the country, I was forced to rush back to Istanbul, leaving half of my things in London.

Obviously my story doesn't end here. So guess what happened when I returned to Istanbul? Yes, my wonderful lawyer discovered that the visa process had been mishandled! So, cut the story short: we applied again, and we secured Akış Ka’s UK-approved Global Talent Endorsement! Naturally!!

This is amazing news. But here’s the catch: during this process, I couldn’t settle in either London or Istanbul. Caught in between, I built my life as a pet sitter. Because of the possibility of moving to London, I couldn’t commit to a permanent job or project here. And in Istanbul and Turkey, the shrinking spaces for breath and freedom weren’t exactly eager to create room for someone like me, a performance artist. And now, 2025 has been declared a “year of the family” by the Turkish government. Guess what that means: a surge in LGBTQ+ hatred. And, as always, the ones blamed for the decay of the so-called sacred family structure are people like us, who are rejected by our own families… Whatevz, let’s not get into politics..

In short, I’m now facing the second and final stage of my visa process. By mid-February, I need to finance my health insurance. Beyond that, I need financial support to make a manageable start as I transition to life in London, secure a job, and adapt to this new chapter.

Here’s the breakdown of my needs:

Visa application fee: £192

Immıgratıon Health Surchange (annual £1,035 x 5 years): £5,175

Manageable start (monthly x 3 months): £3,000

Rent: £700

Food and drinks: £300

Merhaba, ben Akış Ka. Performans sanatçısı, drag queen ve aktivistim. İstanbul’un “o kızı” da denebilir :) 11 senelik İstanbul hayatım boyunca lubunyalar ve sokaklardan çok şey öğrendim. Bütün baskı ve ayrımcılıklara rağmen, partilerin aranan drag queen’i olarak, kendimi SALT Beyoğlu’nun duvarlarına vurarak ve bu duvarlarda bıraktığım izlerle CIRCA Prize’a aday olarak, Prince Claus Fonu’ndan Tohum Ödülü’nü alarak, ödüllü filmlerde gelinciklerle rol arkadaşlığı yaparak ve lubunya marşları kuvvetinde single’lar yayınlayarak kendim olma mücadelesinin meyvelerini aldım, #şükür dedim ve bu meyveleri yedim. Şimdi yeni şehirler, yeni insanlar ve yeni sokaklar beni bekliyor. Daha çok öğrenmenin ve İstanbul'dan öğrendiklerimi aktarmanın zamanı geldi.

Aslında hikaye 2023’te başlamıştı bile. Londra Belediyesi’nin Pride ayı programına sanatçı olarak davet edilmiş ve bir anda kendimi Londra’da buluvermiştim. Bu sayede, uzun zamandan sonra hem sanatımı hem de hikayemi kendim olarak, özgürce ve neredeyse bağımsız bir biçimde geniş kitlelerle buluşturabilmiştim.

Tam bu sırada, yine siz değerli takipçi ve destekçilerim sayesinde, Global Talent vizesine başvurma gücünü kendimde buldum. Sonra başıma gelenler! Başvurum yanlış değerlendirilmesin mi!!!! Ben kendimi “ay ben yoksa sanatçı değil miyim?” triplerine sokmadım mı… Sonra tabii ki hemen çıktım, “benim sanatçılığıma bir konsolosluk makamı mı karar verecek” dedim. Ama tabii bana “ülkeden çıkman gerekiyor” diye mektup yollanınca, eşyalarımın da yarısını Londra’da bırakarak apar topar İstanbul’a döndüm. Peki İstanbul’a döndükten sonra ne olsa beğenirsiniz? Canım avukatım vize sürecinin yanlış ilerletildiğini gördü ve ikinci kez başvurarak, Akış Ka’nın İngiltere onaylı Global Talent Endorsement’ını aldık! Heralde!!

Bu çook iyi bir haber. Sorunsa şu: Bu süreçte ben ne Londra’ya ne de İstanbul’a yerleşemedim. Arada kalmış bir şekilde hayatımı petsitter olarak sürdürdüm. Londra’ya gitme ihtimali yüzünden burada kalıcı bir iş veya projeye dahil olamadım, ki İstanbul ve Türkiye’de soluklandığımız ve gittikçe daralan alanlar benim gibi bir performans sanatçısına yer açmak için çok da hevesli değildi. Şimdi 2025 de “aile yılı” ilan edildi... Bilin bakalım bunun anlamı ne: LGBTİ+ nefretinin katlanarak büyümesi. Çürümüş aile kurumunun da suçlusu, aileleri tarafından yok sayılan bizler olacağız. Neyyyse hiç o politikalara, siyasetlere girmeyeyim. Kısacası, önümde vizenin ikinci ve son aşaması var. Şubat ortasına kadar sağlık sigortamı finanse etmem gerekiyor. Ayrıca Londra’ya yerleşme sürecinde iş bulup şehre adapte olana kadar insanca bir başlangıç yapabilmek için maddi desteğinize ihtiyacım var.

Vize başvuru ücreti: 192 pound
