Help Alameda Family Get a Roof and Running Water
Donation protected
Shaun, his wife Julie, and their three children decided to convert their garage into a living space so Shaun's elderly parents, with their declining health, could come and live with them.
Trusting a contractor with your family home and all of your life's savings is a scary step.
Having that contractor start the work, take all your money, leave your home in an unlivable state, and then refuse to come back is a nightmare.
The Alameda's home is severely damaged. They have been left without a roof for months, causing massive water damage from leaks, leading to mold, mice, and rats infestation. They’ve lost 150lbs+ of food storage.
A small leak in the pressure tank, which the contractor created when he moved it and ignored the damage, caused their pressure tank to go out and the well pump to fry.
As of today, they still have no running water.
It has been 15 days.
With no water, they had to give away their chickens, and their garden is dying, all primary food sources for the Alameda’s.
Because of the health and safety issue surrounding so much mold throughout the home and no running water, Shaun and Julie were forced to have their children and Shaun’s elderly parents stay elsewhere. They are still separated at this time.
They are showering at a local campground.
A local laundry mat lost Julie's clothing.
They also lost a ton of products Julie had been creating for the opening of their small farm store in October (soaps, salves and herbs - all from their garden). These were all damaged by the water.
Their home is also their school, as Julie homeschools all their children.
Shaun and Julie are kind, generous and honest people who live a beautifully simple life with their three children on their small country farm. I'm asking the community to come together with understanding and help them get the roof on their home and their well fixed so they can have running water and be reunited with their children.
****For any contractors interested in donating their time and/or materials, below is the timeline and materials on site. Pictures of the home and materials provided upon request****
Damages are massive. The Alameda’s have no roof, are in need of a door and a few windows.
The county won't sign off on the roof as-is.
ServePro states that their house is a total loss, meaning that everything will need to be taken down to the studs, treated for mold and replaced.
The Alameda’s have been told by one contractor that it is about $180k in damages done. They understand that this cost is unattainable.
They desperately need to get the mold removed, the roof on their house completed, a door and some windows, and their pressure tank and well fixed so they have running water. The fall rains will start soon, and time is of the essence.
Timeline of Events:
- 4/25 - Alameda’s paid a contractor approximately $40k down payment to convert the garage into living space for Shaun's elderly, sick parents. The contractor found roof rot.
- 5/23 - They paid the contractor an additional $40k to replace/repair the entire roof.
- 6/3-6/4 - The contractor removed the roof.
- 6/4 - The Alameda’s found out that their roof was not properly sealed when it down poured INSIDE their house.
- 6/5-7/3 - Elderly parents were displaced.
- 6/8-6/19 - No Running Water.
- 7/3 - Entire living room was filled with water when it rained.
- 7/9 - Contractor failed roof inspection.
- 7/25 -The Alameda’s found out from the city that the contractor reported that his engineered stamped drawings were approved and that he would send his crew out to tear off the other half of the roof.
- 7/26 - The contractor sent his crew to take off the other half of the roof.
- As of today, the contractor has not returned since 7/26.
- The Alameda’s later learned that the contractor didn't even submit for permits until 7/27. His paperwork was denied and the county required "additional info" on 8/8. He has not presented any additional work.
- 8/15 - The Alameda’s made a claim on their homeowner's insurance; no response to date. They have called every day and emailed.
- 8/16 - Still NO WATER. Another contractor assessed the damages to help with the insurance claim. After he inspected the property, he found that when the original contractor damaged the pressure tank, the continuous leak fried the Alameda’s well pump. His estimated cost is $180k to fix the damage. This cost doesn’t include housing the Alameda’s while the massive damage is repaired.
- 8/25 - Original Contractor has not been to the job site in 31 days.
- 8/26 - State Farm was supposed to get back to them a week ago about an insurance claim. Nobody will return their calls or emails.
- 8/29 - Still no response from State Farm. Still no running water. Contractor has not been back for 36 days.
