From the family of Alan O'Hare.
As some may know, Teacher, Therapist, Storyteller, and Schenachie, Alan O'Hare suffered a brain injury due to a heart issue which occurred on April 3rd, 2019. The injury has left him with permanent cognitive damage which can mirror the effects of Alzheimer's and Dementia but in his case, do not progressively get worse over time.
As a result of the injury, he was forced to give up his position as a long-term teacher at Lesley College as well as his storytelling work. He now lives on primarily off of his Social Security. He still remains in his rented house in Taunton, MA but due to his cut in income, the cost of increased medical support staff visiting, and anything else required for care, family has been using what he did have saved to pay any costs that his Social Security will not.
Ideally the solution and goal has been Senior Housing which he would be able to live somewhat independently at strictly off of his monthly Social Security.
He has been on the waiting list for 15 towns for a year and a half. A long process and wait is normal but with Covid, it became even longer. We don't think it wise to continue drawing from his limited savings to cover his costs of daily living so he can remain in his home until housing comes through.
This GoFundMe page is to ask for financial support for his monthly bills until the end of the year when hopefully housing will have come through. The goal amount is based on discontinuing the use of his savings as well as using less of his Social Security over the next few months so some of it can be set aside.
Although Alan does have some cognitive issues, his health is managed well with medication and a regular nurse and additional home health care visits. He is still physically active and able to tell stories going all the way back to his childhood. He is protected by his cat Tigger and tries to write daily.
His daughter Kathryn is his financial manager and will be managing this GoFundMe page. Thank you for reading and helping if you can.
Peace and joy to all!
